May 19th. . Good. - Overt 25 words penned on 3 inch wide by 4-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. A renaissance man, the classical scholar, numismatist, archeologist and member of parliament Richard Payne Knight, regretting that he must turn down an invitation "Mr. Payne Knight is very sorry that a previous engagement will not allow him to avail himself of Mr Frederick Webbe's kind Invitation." Signed in the third person within the text of the note. The note is mounted with glue from the verso on 4-7/8 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide buff card stock. The corners of the mount are slightly chipped with soiling to the edges. There is minor discoloration to the top of the note from the glue applied to the verso. Good. The classical scholar, archaeologist, and numismatist Richard Payne Knight (1751-1824) is known for his theories about picturesque beauty and his interest in ancient phallic symbols.
