Together, 3 volumes in one. 128; 116; 81pp. Extra-illustrated with 16 original mounted photographs, including portraits signed by Grant, Schuyler Colfax and James G. Blaine, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln (approx. 8x6 inches) and images of the principal government buildings in Washington, D.C., as well as a folding map of the city. 8vo. Addison Henry Laflin (1823-1878) served as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, from the 20th District of New York (i.e., Herkimer, Jefferson and Lewis Counties), holding office from 1865 to 1871. The son of a printmaker, he graduated Williams College, became a paper manufacturer and served in the New York State Senate before running for federal office. After his years in Congress he was appointed Naval Officer of the Port of New York by President U. S. Grant. Laflin evidently assembled this volume for his daughter Grace Laflin (1857-1914), dating the gilt stamped gift presentation on the upper cover March 4, 1871, the first day of the 42nd Congress, marking the end of Laflin's time in Washington. The three directories contained within the volume each list Laflin, among a tremendous amount of information about the government in the Reconstruction period. But the volume is greatly enhanced by its extra-illustations, including signed photographs by President Grant, Vice President Schuyler Colfax and Speaker of the House James G. Blaine, each signed on the mounts below the images. Also included is an iconic photograph of Abraham Lincoln, being an image taken by Anthony Berger in Brady's Studio in 1864. Berger served as the head of Matthew Brady's studio and captured this image of the President on February 9, 1864, depicting a seated Lincoln made famous by its use on the five dollar bill. Also included among the extra-illustrations is a portrait of Laflin himself, as well as photographs of the White House, Capitol, Patent Office, Treasury Department, War Department, Smithsonian Castle and other notable government buildings. Contemporary red morocco gilt. Provenance: Grace Laflin (presentation from her father, U.S. Representative from New York Addison Henry Laflin) Together, 3 volumes in one. 128; 116; 81pp. Extra-illustrated with 16 original mounted photographs, including portraits signed by Grant, Schuyler Colfax and James G.
