Paperback. Etat : Good. First Edition. First Edition. Paperback. "Come meet the gay crusaders." This 1972 first printing of The Gay Crusaders, a collection profiling 15 early leaders of the gay liberation movement, comes from the library of influential Jewish lesbian feminist, theorist, and scholar Dr. Bette S. Tallen (1950-2023), with the handwritten ownership inscription of the Alice F. Fix Memorial Library, honoring the women's studies professor and lesbian theater archivist, in whose name SUNY New Paltz annually presents the Alice Fix Award for student feminist activism to this day. The Gay Crusaders collects in-depth interviews with 15 gay rights leaders during the early days of the gay liberation movement, conducted and compiled by Kay Lahusen (under the nom-de-plum Kay Tobin), the first openly lesbian American photojournalist, with help from Randy Wicker, a leader of the homophile movement in New York in the 1960s, a witness to the Stonewall riots, and public relations director of the Homosexual League of New York, an article about whom Dan Wakefield entitled "The Gay Crusader" in the June 1963 issue of Nugget magazine. The gay crusaders profiled here include: Troy Perry, Jim Owles, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, Craig Rodwell, Dick Michaels, Frank Kameny, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, Ruth Simpson, Marty Robinson, Lige Clarke and Jack Nichols, Arthur Evans, and Barbara GIttings. This 1972 first printing comes illustrated with 16 pages of photographs by author, photographer, and gay rights activist Kay Tobin Lahusen, founding member of the Gay Activists Alliance Fred Orlansky, iconic gay physique photographer Roy Blakey, gay filmmaker Pat Rocco, founder of the LGBT Community Center National History Archive Richard C. Wandel, and others. A well-worn but well-storied first printing of this landmark anthology celebrating the early leaders of the Gay Liberation Movement, with a provenance honoring two early and important lesbian scholars: Dr. Bette S. Tallen and Dr. Alice F. Fix. "The gay crusaders profiled in this book tell about what led them into gay activism. The path is sometimes one of chance: an arrest in a bar for just being there; a request to help start a lesbian social club, a less-than-honorable discharge from the service. The crusaders written about here were chosen for their records of accomplishment in advancing the gay cause, and for their diversity of their contributions and viewpoints. And finally, all, of course, are gay, and proud. Come meet the gay crusaders." -Introduction 7" X 4". 238pp. Ex-Alice F. Fix Memorial Library, with inscription to front pastedown and index card laid in. Alice Fix was a women's studies professor and lesbian theater archivist; to this day, SUNY New Paltz awards the Alice Fix Award to recognize feminist activism. Moderate wear to pictorial wraps featuring a photograph of a gay rights protest by Richard C. Wandel to front. Hard lean to creased spine, heavy edgewear with softening to corners and edges, and mild soiling to wraps and edges of text block. Binding remains sound. Photograph gathering, often the first to loosen in a vintage mass market paperback, has been reinforced with archival adhesive. Pages are heavily age-toned with occasional smudge or spot of soiling. Inked name and phone number to rear pastedown.…
