Charles L. Grant (1942-2006) was one of the most influential and distinctive voices in American horror fiction of the late twentieth century, celebrated in particular for pioneering what became known as "quiet horror" — a mode that eschewed graphic violence and shock in favour of a slow, atmospheric accumulation of dread, most often grounded in ordinary domestic settings and the quiet, unresolved grief of characters who have lost someone or something irreplaceable.
