June 1944, the month of the D-Day landings carried out by Allied forces in Normandy, France. Germany’s 2nd SS Panzer Division, one of Adolf Hitler’s most elite armor units, had recently been pulled from the Eastern Front and relocated to France in order to regroup, recruit more troops, and restock equipment. With Allied forces suddenly on European ground, the division—Das Reich —was called up to counter the invasion. Its march northward to the shores of Normandy, 15,000 men strong, would become infamous as a tale of unparalleled brutality in World War II. Das Reich is Sir Max Hastings’s narrative of the atrocities committed by the 2nd SS Panzer Division during June of 1944: first, the execution of 99 French civilians in the village of Tulle on June 9; and second, the massacre of 642 more in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10. Sir Max Hastings (West Berkshire, UK) is an author, journalist, and broadcaster whose work has won numerous awards and accolades. He now writes regularly for the Daily Mail and Financial Times, of which he is a contributing editor, and reviews books for the Sunday Times and New York Review of Books. He has published 23 books. In 2012, Sir Max Hastings was honored with the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.

CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Well, these guys, on the way to the front in Normandy after D-Day, got bogged down with operations carried out by the Resistance. The Marquis, with the help of SOE and OSS gave these SS Nazis a tough time, including blowing things up, killing Germans and delaying the German's response up to repel the invasion, and capturing an SS battalion commander. So, in response the Germans resorted to mass murder; not the normal kind of mass murder using a bullet to the head, they felt the need to shoot to wound and burn the men in some barns. For the women and children, they burned them in the village church, shooting any who made it out. In total, 642 men, women, and children were murdered. The village of Oradour-Sur-Glane, was not rebuilt after the war, instead DeGaulle decided it should be a permanent memorial to those who died and survived and to the cruelty of the Nazi cooupation.
