The unique qualities that permitted the Inuit people to develop a material culture from nothing other than stone and the bones of animals, and the awareness that these inherent skills are disappearing, prompted Father Van de Velde to record for posterity such detailed information as is still available on the tools and weapons once used in their daily lives. A project involving the reproduction of historical artifacts from living memory, is by its nature an ephemeral one.
