The nature of AI policy within China and the context within which it has emerged, by mapping the major national-level policy initiatives that express the intention to utilise AI. We identified three areas of particular relevance: international competitiveness, economic growth, and social governance (construction). The development and deployment of AI in each of these areas have implications for China and for the international community. For example, although the 'trump-card' policy to gain a military advantage may not be something new, its application to AI technologies risks igniting an arms race and undermining international stability This book evaluates the significance and potential of AI in improving China's military capabilities. Chinese official documents and their enunciation of military doctrine indicate that the country's leaders see massive promise in AI's utility and are working to leverage this emerging technology into their force posture.
