Moderate rubbing to boards. Split to gutter at front hinge. ; Third edition. xxxii, 370, [2 (advertisements)] pages. Half calf and marbled papered boards. Spine with 5 raised bands and red lettering piece. Gilt lettering on spine: "REPUBLIC / OF / PLATO". Vignette portrait on title page. Page dimensions: 152 x 98mm. Series: The Golden Treasury. "I went down yesterday to the Piraeus with Glaucon the son of Ariston, to offer up prayer to the goddess, and also from a wish to see how the festival, then to be held for the first time, would be celebrated. I was very much pleased with the native Athenian processions; though that of the Thracians appeared to be no less brilliant. We had just finished our prayers, and satisfied our curiosity, and were returning to the city, when Polemarchus the son of Cephalus caught sight of us as a distance, as we were on our way towards home, and told his servant to run and bid us wait for him." - page 1. [Reference: DNB, entry on Vaughan, David James by W.G.D.F. - "In 1852 Vaughan and Llewelyn Davies brought out together a translation of Plato's 'Republic,' with introduction, analysis, and note. Davies undertook the first five books, and Vaughan the last five, each author submitting to the other his work for correction or amendment. The analysis was the work of Vaughan, whilst Davies was responsible for the introduction. In 1858 a second edition was issued, and in 1860 a new edition, without the introduction, in the 'Golden Treasury' series. This was stereotyped and has since been frequently reprinted. [. . .] The translation is exact and scholarly. Despite the superiority of Jowett's translation in respect alike of English style and of the presentation of Plato's general conceptions, Davies and Vaughan's rendering excels Jowett's in philological insight, and indicates with far greater fidelity the construction of difficult passages."].
