Hardcover. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : Fair. Book Club Edition. Damage to front cover bottom right side of book.Anna Kowalczek arrived on Capitol Hill at the start of World War II, old Senator Seab Cooley of South Carolina predicted, "Mark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty years later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas-as columnist-as television personality-as major political figure-and above all as founder and publisher of the Washington Inquirer and head of a media empire that stretches from coast to coast. How Anna clawed her way to the top of the Washington heap from a modest Polish home in Punxsutawney, PA., is related in this engrossing novel of the Washington scene Allen Drury knows so well and has described so powerfully in his previous political novels. His tale of Anna, her rise and those who either successfully accompanied her or fell by the wayside is, as Seab Cooley also remarked, "some skeerazzle." Here you will meet the people who had to live with Anna and the four horsemen (or, as Anna would put it now, "horsepersons") who came as eager youngsters to the wild and wacky Washington of World War II and stayed to become some of the town's top journalists: Ed Macomb, the narrator, who serves loyally as managing editor of the Inquirer until Anna with the greatest love and reluctance slits his throat professionally and kicks him out- Fat and faithful Bessie Revere, who receives the same treatment yet also remains loyal- Talbot Farson, who survives Presidential enmity, a Congressional investigation and a dubious political past to retain his triumphant grip on the news as editor of the Inquirer- Unhappy Gordon Hastings, married to one of Washington's most ambitious women and eventually destroyed- Young Gordie and Lisa, Anna's children, the only two people their mother couldn't dominate. And, always, Anna herself, brilliant, ruthless, all-conquering-and yet somehow pathetic and vulnerable, likable and touching in spite of the whim-of-iron qualities that make her at the same time one of Washington's most successful women and one of its more formidable monsters. ark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty years later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas- as columnist- as television personality- as major political figure- and abov (illustrateur).…

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Away All Boats tells the intimate and heroic life story of the attack transport Belinda. It tells of the ships and men that came in under naval bombardment, that landed our marines and GI's in battle, that took them wounded and dying off the blasted beaches at Makin Island, Kwajalein, Saipan and Lingayen Gulf. It is the Pacific War re-created in its entirety-from the shakedown cruise to the ominous lowering of the LCVP's, from the West Coast docks to the Hawaiian staging areas through the bitter engagements in the Marshalls and Marianas. It will make thousands of veterans of the island-hopping campaign say, "This is it. This is the way it was." And for the families stateside, who followed their men through terrible headlines and letters three weeks old, this is the novel that brings their war into the home. Here is Lieutenant Dave MacDouglall, boat group commander during the first practice landings, then navigator, later executive officer and finally commanding officer after the kamikaze attack off Okinawa. Here are two captains: Gedney, who loved and lived by the traditions of the Old Navy; and his successor, Hawks, who resented higher authority. Here are the men, each of whom contributed his bit of knowledge-or lack of it-to the sum of the experiences, fears and intuitions of the others. Brave men and cowards, strong men and weaklings, worked side by side; and the cold, competent voice of authority which drove them through their paces was often no more than the mechanically amplified voice of a relatively simple and infinitely fallible man who yearned to be relieved for chow. This is the way it was. The assault landings, the task-force maneuvers, the enemy air strikes-even the "foul ups" and frustrations-all are accurate and uncompromisingly true. Accurate, too, are the details of life aboard the attack transport, the overmastering Plan of the Day, the dramatic stages by which Amphibious Operations grew in efficiency from the Gilberts to Okinawa. At first the U.S.S. Belinda was mere machinery. But the sea swells tempered her; the men breathed life into her; the training missions galvanized her men into a crew. Then came the marines and GI's who fulfilled her purpose, the cry "Away all boats," the mothering of landing craft, grace under fire, the thundering beachhead. Time and again the thundering beachhead, until it seemed the Belinda would never stop: she'd go on and on from one island to the next, and the ramps would always be dropping on some far-off coral strand. his is it. This is the way it was." And for the families stateside, who followed their men through terrible headlines and letters three weeks old, this is the novel that brings their war into the home." Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Large Size Book. The Buckleys are acknowledged, almost without dispute, as the real heart and brain of the growing respectable Right in the United States. As Michael Harrington is quoted in this book: "The Conservative Party is a very serious development that could be a portent of significant changes in American political life. And The Buckleys are the first family of this not inconsiderable phenomenon." The Buckleys is the first book to be published about this large, fascinating, and important family. It examines their beliefs, their practices, their formation, and what the author believes to be the mere commencement of their impact on the United States-an impact that in his view is the more dangerous precisely in proportion to those qualities of the Buckleys that are the most admirable: their intelligence, their decency their genuine culture, and their total lack of hypocrisy. And while the book concentrates, necessarily, in good part upon William F. Buckley Jr. and Senator James Buckley, it is concerned too with the entire family and its history, beginning with the arrival of the first Buckley in this country toward the end of the nineteenth century. The Buckleys details the growth of the family fortune; the education and maturation of the many children of William F. Buckley Sr.; the early emergence of William Jr. as the chief spokesman for the family's belief in the responsibilities of the aristocracy and his later fame as author, television personality, friend of Whittaker Chambers, foe of Gore Vidal; and the politically significant election of James Buckley to the United states Senate. Based in part upon personal interviews with some members of the family and with family associates and in part upon research among primary and secondary sources. The Buckleys is a first-rate study of a family in action, living its beliefs, expounding them, full of passion and self-contradiction. It is a valuable and complete book on its subjects as there is likely to be. he Conservative Party is a very serious development that could be a portent of significant changes in American political life. And the Buckleys are the first family of this not inconsiderable phenomenon." The Buckleys is the first book to be published a (illustrateur).…

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Printing.Blanche White-first featured in Blanche on the Lam and Blanche Among the Talented Tenth-is a very black, middle-aged woman who cleans white people's houses for a living. Tart-tongued and shrewd, with a keen nose for trouble, she's also a queen-sized snoop-who sees at a glance what people are really up to-especially if it's criminal. And heaven help you if Blanche has taken against you! Most of the people Blanche doesn't like are the "haves" of this world-and in Blanche Cleans Up, this domestic-worker-by choice will encounter some "haves" with a vengeance. The funny thing is, Blanche had just been thinking that her life had finally settled down. It's ben three years since she had to grab the kids and scurry out of Farleigh, North Carolina. Now they've all settled into life in the Roxbury section of Boston, and Blanche herself is feeling like she may finally be free to enjoy life-at least a little. But before blanche can say, "Breakfast is ready," she gets suckered into standing in as cook-housekeeper to one Allister Bindle, a Boston Brahmin politician, and his do-gooder wife. Blanche is quickly enmeshed in a festering canker of a scandal that moves from the Brindles' house (a.k.a. Prozac House) to her own black community as she tries to figure out the truth behind the swimming-pool death of a young black man who knew a little too much. With life suddenly getting just a bit too interesting on both the home and work fronts, Blanche finds herself dealing with a love triangle with bent angles, teen pregnancy, phony spirituality, environmental skullduggery, homophobia, a letter she wishes she hadn't read, a friend whose life she might have saved, and at least one person who doesn't mean her any good. To protect herself and safeguard her family, Blanche will have to rely on her own hard-to-beat intuition-and call o her community network for info, her Ancestors for guidance, and her self. aves" of this world- and in Blanche Cleans Up, this domestic- worker-by-choice will encounter some "haves" with a vengeance. Some time during the night of June 23rd, 1911, Kleeman and Holtz escaped from the Hudson County Penitentiary at Snake Hill, where they were serving a sentence for carrying burglar's tools. These men are Germans and have been in this country but a short while, each of them has a criminal record in Europe. If located, arrest and will send officers with necessary papers, forward all information to PATRICK HAYES, Jr., Chief of Police, Hoboken, N. J." They were re-apprehended within weeks of their escape. Given the Bertillon metrics and distinct scars/tattoos, hiding in early 20th-century urban communities was difficult once local precincts shared data. After their arrest for possession of burglar's tools - a common charge used at the time to lock up safe crackers and thieves before they could execute a heist they were sent to the infamous Hudson County Penitentiary at Snake Hill (Secaucus, NJ). Situated on a massive volcanic rock rising out of the Hackensack Meadowlands, Snake Hill was a grim, isolated institutional complex housing an almshouse, an asylum, and the penitentiary. It was considered secure due to the treacherous surrounding swamps. After their capture, they were returned to Hudson County to finish out their maximum sentences with additional time for escape. Both men traveled under multiple alias to throw off authorities across borders. Germany kept meticulous criminal registries and the U.S. police Knew Their Background thanks to the Bertillon System. When Kleeman and Holtz were arrested in New Jersey, the police measured their bodies and recorded their fingerprints. These exact physical dimensions were cross-referenced with international police circulars or shared directly with European agencies (often via letters and steamships). Because German police meticulously recorded Bertillon metrics for repeat offenders, New Jersey authorities were able to definitively match the physical profiles of "Kleeman" and "Holtz" to active criminal profiles filed under their aliases in Germany. They were part of a wave of professional European criminals who migrated to rapidly growing American cities like New York and Hoboken, wrongly assuming American police wouldn't be able to trace their overseas pasts. 1911 was the turning point when fingerprinting officially took over law enforcement in the United States. The Hoboken Police Department was operating during a major forensic transition. The poster itself captures a unique moment in history where police were using both systems simultaneously to double their chances of catching a fugitive. On the poster, beneath the Bertillon bone measurements, you will see a specific string of numbers and letters for each man: Kleeman: [5 R 10 / 17 R 11] 13. American history that a court legally accepted fingerprint evidence to convict someone of a crime (a murder case). (illustrateur).…

  • [Wanted Poster]POLICE DEPARTMENT Office of Marshal BALTIMORE, MD., October 9th, 1906. WANTED FOR FALSE PRETENSES. [Mugshot Images: ID 1949] JAMES HARTRAY LANGDON. WE HOLD WARRANT AND INDICTMENT for the arrest of JAMES HARTRAY LANGDON on the charge of obtaining a Gold Open Watch and Chain, valued at $215.00, by means of False Pretenses (Bogus Check), from John W. Mealy, Sons and Co., of this city, on October 1st, 1906. Description of Watch: Gold Open Face, size No. 12, 18 karat, minute repeater, gold hands, made by Tuchon [Touchon] & Co., Geneva, No. 7909; also Gold Rope Chain.

The watch Langdon stole was a luxury timepiece of exceptional rarity and value. The poster spells it "Tuchon," but it was a Touchon & Co. watch, a Swiss watch manufactured in Geneva. Touchon was renowned for producing exceptionally high-grade, ultra-thin mechanical movements. Their movements were so masterfully constructed that elite luxury houses like Tiffany & Co. and Black, Starr & Frost regularly purchased Touchon timepieces to retail under their own prestigious store names. The most notable detail on the flyer is that this was a minute repeater. A minute repeater is a masterpiece of mechanical engineering. By sliding a small lever on the side of the case, the pocket watch physically chimes the exact time using tiny internal hammers. .

    Langue : anglais

Edité par without needing to light a match. Minute repeaters were difficult to assemble by hand. The watch case was forged from solid 18k yellow gold. An "Open Face" style meant it lacked a protective front metal cover, allowing the wearer to see the time instantly through the crystal face without opening a lid. In standard watchmaking scales, a Size 12 pocket watch measures approximately 1.55 inches (c. 40mm) in diameter. This was considered a sleek, elegant, and comfortably slim "gentleman's pocket size," contrasting with the larger, heavier pocket watches carried by railroad conductors. The Serial Number (No. 7909) was the unique identifier stamped onto the inner gold case and movement by Touchon & Co. to prevent counterfeiters and help jewelers, authenticate it. Langdon didn't just take the watch; he took a heavy, matching solid-gold decorative rope chain used to anchor the timepiece safely to a vest pocket. The flyer notes the store value was $215.00 in 1906. Adjusted for inflation, that equals roughly $7,500 today.

Mealy, Sons and Co., of this city, on October 1st, 1906. Description of Watch: Gold Open Face, size No. 12, 18 karat, minute repeater, gold hands, made by Tuchon & Co., Geneva, No. 7909; also Gold Rope Chain. Description of Langdon: Age about 29 years, height 5 ft. 5 in., weight about 115 lbs., slender build, smooth face, dark chestnut hair, medium fair complexion, violet blue eyes; when last seen was dressed in light grey or light large plaid suit; wears handkerchief in coat pocket, puff tie with scarf pin in it. Kindly have thorough search made at all Pawn-brokers and Dealers for the above described Watch, and if located advise me at once; also keep sharp lookout for Langdon, and if located arrest and wire me, and an officer will be sent with papers for him. Very respectfully, TH[OMAS] F. FARNAN, Marshal of Police. On October 1, 1906, Langdon entered John W. Mealy, Sons & Co. jewelers in Baltimore and purchased a high-end luxury watch and chain valued at $215 (equivalent to roughly $7,500 today). He paid with a bad check drawn from the Corn Exchange Bank of New York, where he held no account. The police department distributed this circular on October 9, and Langdon was quickly apprehended. On November 15, 1906, there was a formal arraignment before Judge Harlan. During the process of entering a plea, Langdon was permitted to address the court. Langdon used this opportunity to make a statement in mitigation. He didn't deny taking the watch or passing the check, but he attempted to convince the judge that his intent wasn't criminal. He claimed he acted in "good faith" and fully intended to deposit funds into the New York bank to cover it (an excuse he used in other cases). His excuse was a legal impossibility because the prosecution proved he did not even hold an account at that bank to deposit money into. Once Langdon realized his "good faith" story was dismantled, he pled guilty. To try to garner leniency, he falsely claimed he was 24 years old when in fact he was c. 29. Judge Harlan accepted the guilty plea and based on Langdon's dishonest statements and his history of deception, he sentenced him to 3 years of hard labor in the Maryland Penitentiary. Langdon's criminal career did not start or stop in Baltimore in 1906. He had been a traveling con artist along the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. His favorite tactic was traveling to small town banks, presenting himself as a respectable businessman, and passing forged certified checks. To build trust, he signed the bogus checks using the name of his actual father, Samuel P. Langdon, an apparently reputable figure from Philadelphia. In a major incident prior to Baltimore, a cashier named A.H. Beatty at the Saltsburg Bank in Pennsylvania hesitated over one of Langdon's large Philadelphia checks. Beatty looked up the bank directory, realized the forgery, and had a constable arrest Langdon on the spot. When police locked him up in Pennsylvania, it was learned that Langdon was already a wanted fugitive, with police warrants for identical check fraud schemes in Tyrone (PA), Latrobe (PA), and Youngstown (OH). The watch was probably stripped for its 18-karat gold value, sold under a completely different black-market identity, or sits unrecognized in a private family collection. During the Great Depression and various gold booms of the 20th century, thousands of vintage pocket watches were stripped of their gold. . . and gongs. It rings separate tones for the hours, quarter-hours, and individual minutes. In 1906, before illuminated dials, a minute repeater allowed a wealthy owner to audibly check the time in darkness (such as inside a theater or a horse-drawn carriage (illustrateur).…

Title within architectural arch. Printer's device on title (Yaari number 17). The author's topics are arranged alphabetically: humility, purity of the heart, patience etc. The book is replete with homiletic interpretations of Biblical verses and Agadic passages as well as the Kabbalistic teachings to which R. Bachiah was inclined. See M. Waxman, volume II, pages 275-276. It was printed in Venice in 1545 by the aristocratic Christian publisher Marco Antonio Giustiniani. Some staining. Christian censors inked out certain words and short phrases. On the title page censor inked out the word Talmud. Photos of all pages with inked out words or Hebrew marginalia are available upon request. Thick high quality paper. Modern full leather binding. Translation of title page's Hebrew inscription: I, Netanel Sagri, purchased this in the month of Kislev, [5]421 [= 1661 C.E.] The Israel Ntl library has a manuscript with Netanel Sagri's signature. On the last page, under the censor inscription is a Hebrew inscription, whose English translation is: I have purchased this from the heirs of the honorable, wealthy and prominent Mordechai Puijetto of blessed memory, in the year [5]364 [=1604 C.E.] Puijetto has a variant Hebrew spelling in the Israel Ntl Library catalogue, which approximates Pugetti. Right margin: Gili [possibly a shortened form of a surname (Gilio, Giglio, or Gilii) or a location]. The handwriting is late Renaissance Italic script, aka Italic Cancelleresca (Chancery style) cursive humanistic script. It was very common for early owners or institutional librarians to practice writing or test a newly cut quill (probation pennae) on the blank flyleaves or margins of a book, using well-known philosophical aphorisms etc. to test the flow of their iron gall ink. Inscription of interior Folio 83: • Faint Text: Fr: Hier.º de Genaro de Monopoli de' Minori Oss.ti. • Translation: Friar Hieronymus de Genaro of Monopoli, of the Friars Minor Observant. • Bold Text: Io Hier.º Caracciolo reg.to ff flor.is i9. 28 di 1582 • Translation: I, Hieronymus Caracciolo, royal official. 28th day of [Month], 1582. 1. Inscriptions (Folio 83 Lower Margin) This interior leaf features two distinct overlapping ownership/notarial hands in the lower margin of the left page: an older, fainter inscription and a bold, darker entry dated 1582. On the last page the censors wrote, in Italian and Hebrew: [?Visto et coretto per me boniforte del Asinari?] Ani [= I ]Boniforte de Asinari Fr[ater] Hier[onymu]s Caralus Jaq[isito]r [?Anno ie] 19 [?Jull] 1582 Bottom 2 faint lines in Hebrew: Kinyan Kaspi [= I bought it] [?][?][?] Mordechai [?] [?] [?] In 1545, when this book printed in Venice a fierce commercial war raged. Daniel Bomberg's press faced a major new rival, the Christian nobleman Marco Antonio Giustiniani, (Anglicized as Justinian) who established his own printing house and began publishing Hebrew books, starting with this one. Hebrew books printed in Venice were bought not just by Jews, but also by Christian Hebraists - who learned Hebrew in order to study in the original language the Jewish texts. By 1549 Giustiniani drove Bomberg out of business. Then Alvise Bragadin stepped in to challenge Giustiniani's monopoly. Their rivalry culminating in 1550 when both published dueling, plagiarized editions of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. They denounced each other to the Papal Inquisition, resulting in Pope. They denounced each other to the Papal Inquisition, resulting in Pope Julius III ordering a mass public burning of the Talmud and all Hebrew books in Venice in 1553. This copy is a rare survivor of that destructive mid-16th-century campaign. . . . (illustrateur).…

hardcover. Etat : fine. first edition. - Grand et très fort in-octavo relié pleine toile bleu Lila, état parfait si l'on excepte un dos légèrement insolé, 1266 pages. Richement illustré in et hors-texte.
