Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 3rd Edition. Here is "Natural Religions" by F. Max Müller, which were the Gifford Lectures delivered in 1888 before the University of Glasgow. This book, published in 1898 by Longmans, Green and Company, was a "New Edition", issued as Volume I of "The Collected Works of F. Max Müller". This particular volume came from a private library which was extensive enough to require a cataloging system; thus we see a catalog number written on the spine. There are no other catalog markings in the book, no writing and no ownership signatures. Please read our condition report, given below. The book covers a great deal of time and territory, presenting many different religions and religious systems, including Christian, Jewish, Mohammedanism (his choice of wording), and other far and near Eastern religions such as Zoroastrianism, Hindu and Vedic theologies, Buddhism, Lao Tzu, Confucius and also many other more peripheral belief systems. Ancient mythologies and linguistic influences are discussed in detail. Müller was directly involved with the "Sacred Books of the East" series, and his name tops the list of those who brought a scientific analysis to the study of world religions. Our modern understanding of Eastern religions and mythologies have advanced considerably since the time of Professor Müller, who was one of the pioneers in this field, mapping out a course for the future. Müller was among the first Westerners to champion the study of ancient Vedic teachings. He worked on a translation of the Sanskrit "Rig Vedas" for many years. They were published circa 1874. SERIES : The Collected Works of the Right Hon. F. Max Müller, (Vol. I) TITLE : Natural Religion - The Gifford Lectures Delivered Before the University of Glasgow in 1888 AUTHOR : F. Max Müller (Friedrich Max Müller, 1823 - 1900) IMPRINT : Longmans, Green, and Company PLACE : London DATE : 1898 EDITION : Stated : "New Edition" ; Second Printing of the Third Edition (The Collected Works) DETAILS : Trade hardcover; contains two Prefaces (to the First Edition and to The Collected Works); contains Lord Gifford's Will & Bequest; presents 20 Lectures; has many footnotes, bibliographical and other; has an Index; has a Catalogue of the Publisher's books at the back of the book; approximately 5" x 7 3/8" (12mo); light gray, cloth-covered boards and spine, with gilt lettering on spine; black calendered end-papers; xxxvi + 608 pages, plus 32 pages of publisher's catalogue. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted - FROM A PRIVATE LIBRARY :: EXTERIOR -- The spine extremities are compressed and display abrasion and a touch of sizing loss. A white ink catalog number is written on the spine, just under the author's name - this is from a private - or personal - collection; gilt on spine is still fairly bright; joints are rubbed ; the front board has modest surface rub, and a touch of scuffing (near the bottom fore-edge corner); the rear board has a greater extent of surface rub and a greater degree of scuffing; a minute 'tea' stain displays at the bottom edge; the text-block edges have been cleaned and present nicely, with no marking. BINDING -- The binding is cracked (hinges slightly separated thus exposing the binding thread) - this at the front just after and adjacent to the free end-paper. The binding is solid, if not as tight as when issued. INTERIOR -- The paper is lightly toned; the first few leaves are creased at the bottom fore-edge corners - this through most of the Table of Contents; thereafter the leaves are clean and free of marking; two leaves, near the back (containing pp 521 - 524, are torn at the top corners, having a loss of paper. The leaf with pp 449/450 has a small binding error at the bottom edge, where there was an excess of paper , which was subsequently folded in, creating a tear and a crease. This was an error of production. No writing - no marginalia, no signatures.

Ajouter au panier1 1/2 pages 8vo with mourning border, Parks End, Oxford (embossed headed paper), Tuesday, n.d. [likely 1872]. Müller thanks Grove "for the Plumpudding", writing humorously of his recent - in fact current! - illness: "poor me! I have been laid up for nearly 3 weeks - poisoned from opening a sewer. France may dance on a volcano, in this country we dance on a Sewer, and I don't know which catastrophe I should prefer!" The French idiom he refers to can loosely be translated as "don't play with fire / don't tempt fate". He changes the subject to music, continuing, "how I wish I could hear Joachim" [Joseph Joachim (violinist, composer, conductor)], but due to his illness he is unable to: "no such luck for me, at least for the present." He finishes by mentioning his ongoing work on the Rig Veda, and his plans for the near future: "As soon as I have finished vol.V of Rig Veda I go to Strasbourg to delivery my first Course of Lectures in German." He signs off in Latin, "semper tuissimus" [always very much yours]. Max Müller was one of the founders of the western academic field of comparative philology, and in 1868 he became Oxford University's first Professor of Comparative Philology. In 1872 he was offered a position as a professor of Sanskrit at the newly founded university of Strasbourg. Although he decided not to accept the post he agreed to give a series of lectures in the summer of 1872. It is to this lecture series that Müller undoubtedly refers to in this letter. He worked on a critical edition of the Rig-Veda for many years, between 1849 and 1874. Contemporary ink smudge made by Müller before the ink had dried, otherwise in very good condition.

I have been in correspondence with the Editor of the Deutsche Rundschau about a translation of my Recollections. But he last decided against it, because as he says all the plans have been picked out and published in a large number of German papers. He advises publication in book form and thinks I ought to translate the papers myself. That would make a publication of these papers in a serial form very difficult now. You know what the German Reviews pay. £15 a sheet is considerd very good and that is what Dr. Roderbeg has paid me hitherto. But I doubt whether a German translation in a serial form is now feasible [.]". - Auf dem Gegenblatt ein eh. Brief mit U. von H. T.
