Full-page author's portrait engraved by Paulus Pontius after Gertruda van Veen and overall 103 large engraved illustrations (ca. 180x150 mm, 60 in the first part and 43 in the second) by Pierre Daret after Otto Vaenius in the text. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with six raised band and gilt ornaments and title (joints weak, slightly rubbed and worn, top and bottom of the spine damaged). Some light browning and foxing, outer margin of the portrait and outer and lower margin of the plate slightly trimmed, tear restored to the lower margin of the plate, all in all a good, genuine copy. Lavishly illustrated edition in French, the first printed in Brussels, of Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, one of the most successful emblem books of the 17th century first published Latin and Dutch in Antwerp in 1607, alongside Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs. Gomberville's work was first printed in Paris in 1646 with new illustrations created by the engraver Pierre Daret, who had enlarged and retouched Vaenius's emblems. The Brussels editor Foppens used Daret's plates for his edition, crediting Vaenius as the author while retaining Gomberville's instructive comments. The combination of Vaenius's educational emblems based on Horace's poetry and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on Stoic philosophy, gave new impetus to Vaenius's emblems more than sixty years after their first appearance. Vaenius work was published in more than 25 editions in various languages. It ?is rightly considered a work of primary importance for seventeenth-century Horace reception, and for the development of emblematics: Veen ?translated' the works of the Roman poet into catchy, innovative, and artistically demanding images, engravings of high technical quality, to be used for philosophical and moral meditation. He equipped each engraving with a number of text fragments that he selected from Horace and other ancient, primarily Latin, authors. His work not only opened up new dimensions for the genre of emblematics that arose in the sixteenth century, but also for ethical didactics and for the way illustrated books contributed to the transmission of knowledge. The spine and top edge of the front cover are faded to brown. viii & 293 deckle-edged pages with the Latin text, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece by Leopold Lowenstein (1842-1898) after an oil painting titled "A Difficult Line From Horace" by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912). There are minor flaws only, else near fine. Number 28 of 50 Large Paper Copies printed at the Chiswick Press during April 1882 and signed "C. Whittingham et Soc." on the colophon leaf. From the library of Lincoln MacVeagh and his wife Margaret with their "Arcades ambo" bookplate. Lincoln MacVeagh (1890-1972), a Renaissance man, graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek and Classical Greek. He served in the Atois, St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne campaigns of World War I as an aide to the commanding general of the 80th Division and of the Ninth and Sixth Army Corps. He rose to the rank of Major. After the war he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947, testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9, 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal, I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland, the Union of South Africa, Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value.".…
