Ajouter au panierSingle sheet folded into a four page brochure, black and white photographic illustrations, 24.8 x 35cm. Text mainly in Japanese, but the list of "players" and production credits are in both English and Japanese. A few tiny marks, a very good copy. Japanese pamphlet advertising the 1947 MGM movie "The Beginning or the End" - a docu-drama about the development of the atomic bomb. Interestingly, in spite of the press release, it seems highly likely the film was not released in cinemas in Japan as we have not been able to find any record of it being shown. The film was commercially made with the blessings of the US government (President Truman reportedly suggested the film's title). The pamphlet was produced some years after the initial release date of the film, during the Korean War, and appears to be addressed primarily to distributors of the film in Japan. It asks them to do their best to promote press interest in the film and to seek tie-ups with books about atomic weapons. Rather surprisingly, given the film's largely uncritical presentation of the bombing of Hiroshima, the text includes the words "in the midst of the Korean War, this film should be a force for inspiring Japanese citizens' wish for peace". The pamphlet goes on to suggest advertising slogans for the film, such as: "The whole historical account of events leading up to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima from an American perspective", and "A must-see movie for all Japanese people. In the face of this shock and emotion, you must strengthen a new commitment to peace!" This is a fascinating document of its times, though the film's reception in the English-speaking world was lukewarm, and it is difficult to imagine what the reception would have been in Japan.

Ajouter au panierOriginal poster (43 x 33 cm) printed in red with vignette of Chairman Mao to upper left. Slightly wrinkled and with traces of folding, minimal loss to left margin not affecting image or text, 6 inconspicuous pin holes, generally an excellent copy. An unusual and extremely scarce poster, we can trace no other copies. Joseph Losey, himself blacklisted by Hollywood in the 1950s for communist sympathies, here rebuked by the elusive Progressive Film Group (we can find no traces of them), for his so-called "reactionary films". Losey was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, but grew to see himself as semi-British - by the time this poster was produced he had been living in Britain for almost two decades. "Thus of all subjects", writes film critic Nick James, "the British class system fascinated him most". This is apparent in nearly all of his films, perhaps most notably the The Servant (1963), with its sinister dissection of the English class system viewed from the interior of a posh Chelsea flat, The Accident (1967), with its depiction of the sexual power struggles between an Oxford don and his student for the attention of a young Austrian princess, and the Go-Between (1971), whose depiction of a cross-class romance in Norfolk during "the long Edwardian summer of imperial apogee" inspired countless British period costume dramas in its wake. Presumably it was his apparent fascination with the upper classes and "the sheen of decadence" that explains the suspicion with which some sections of the progressive left might have viewed Losey. Indeed, Raymond Carr, the don who was the model for Stephen in Accident, has gone on record to say of him: "I had been told that he was 'left wing' and opposed to the establishment. I came to the conclusion that he was a cinematic Proust, fascinated by the upper crust, even a snob." Nick James, "Joseph Losey & Harold Pinter: In search of poshlust times", 2012.

(The main paper having the title-page to the volume (vol. 79), stamp to title-page). First printings of this series of epoch-making papers in which Janssen introduced the "PHOTOGRAPHIC REVOLVER" and its first successfull use leading to the "First Film" and hereby "realized one of the operations necessary for cinematography"(DSB).In the first papers he conceived the idea of a device of historical interest, the photographic revolver, the technique of short exposures, which is announced here. The third paper is the epoch-making paper in which he specifically describes the "revolver" and its results, the "first film". The fourth paper is his responce to Marey's famous expriments with the "revolver" recording the flight of birds."A long barreled canon-like automatic camera was invented in 1874 by an outstanding pioneer of modern astronomical photography, Jules Janssen. Janssen used the revolving plate technique and called his camera a 'pistol'. Janssen's method used the forerunner of a number of 'gun' cameras with a slowly revolving plate and shutter operated by clockwork. The photos were taken every 70 seconds along the margin of the negative and he used his pistol to record a 48 image sequence of the transit of Venus across the sun at an exposure rate of 1.5 seconds."In planning for the observation of the transit of Venus, which he was to observe in Japan on 9 Deembe 1874, Janssen decided to substitute for visual observation at the time of transit a series of photographs taken in rapid succession, which would permit him to measure the successive positions of the planet in relation to the solar limb. He ordered the construcion of an apparatus consisting of three circular disks with the same axis: the first, pierced by twelve slits, served as the shutter"the second contained a window" the photographic plate, which was circular, was fixed to the third. The first two disks turned with a synchronized movement, the shutter disk continuously and the other irregularly in the intervals of time in which the window was not swept by a slit. A series of separate images laid out on a circle was thus obtained on the plate. In a general manner the apparatus provided an analysis of a motion on the basis of the sequence of its elemental aspects. Here Janssen realized one of the operations necessary for cinematography, which was invented twenty years later, and which required, besides analysis, the synthesis of images." (DSB).
