Few small washi repaired tears, two old repaired tears on the reverse, some occasional browning particularly at centre fold, light staining upper margin intruding a little into the printed image. Overall an attrac…tive copy. Scarce. Lieutenant Colonel Fukushima Yasumasa (1852 ? 1919) undertook a remarkable solo horseback expedition across Eurasia in 1892. Starting in Poland, he traversed Russia and Siberia on his journey. Stationed in Berlin as a military attaché in 1887, he was tasked with researching the Trans-Siberian Railway under construction by Russia. His successful expedition was followed by further explorations in India and the Balkan Peninsula.This sheet, divided into 24 illustrated panels, narrates Fukushima's story, from his youth to his triumphant return after the expedition. Filled with adventure, the story depicts his encounters with both danger and excitement. The narrative unfolds in a clockwise direction, starting from the bottom right corner, similar to a sugoroku game, which this may be but it is uncertain. The central panel, featuring a newly erected statue, represents the final goal of his journey. Each panel is accompanied by a caption that furthers the story.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition, third printing, carefully preserved, of this very large two-sheet map issued one year after the Third Russo-Japanese Convention of 1912 secretly divided Mongolia into two spheres of influence. As Japan began to build its East Asia empire and the Qing dynasty's authority collapsed, Eastern Inner Mongolia - skirting… the Great Wall west to Shanxi - became a natural target for expansion because of its abundant natural resources and its strategic location. Japan first laid claim to the territory in the 1912 convention and included extraterritorially and settlement rights in the notorious Twenty-One Demands of 1915. Increasing Japanese intervention in the region culminated, two and a half decades later, in the creation of the puppet state of Mengjiang. The Mongol prince Demchugdongrub was installed as head of state, and a four-colour, seven-stripe flag was chosen as a symbol of ethnic unity between Chinese (yellow), Mongols (blue), Hui (white), and Japanese (red). First issued in two printings in March 1913, this map was provided as a supplement to the book Higashimoko No Shinso (The Reality of Today's Mongolia), a book with presented a sympathetic portrayal of Japan's geopolitical aims. The map stretches as far south as Beijing and as far north as Heilongjiang province, showing administrative divisions, railways, courier routes, topographical features, and the administrative area for Han Chinese migrants. Colour lithographed map in two sheets (425 x 1,516 mm combined), neatly laid down on linen shortly after publication, folding away to 220 x 140 mm. Small contemporary pencil annotation in lower margin. Map bright, a few small splits along folds, skimmed at margins, a couple of folds strengthened on the verso with archival tape. A very good example.

Ajouter au panierRare first edition, first printing, of this map of the Japanese puppet state of Mengjiang, one of the three collaborationist regimes established in China during the Second World War. We have traced a single copy at the National Diet Library. Mengjiang, which roughly corresponds to present-day Inner Mongolia, was set up in Septem…ber 1939 by the Japanese military as a buffer state and a safe zone for opium production, as well as to facilitate the extraction of the region's abundant natural resources. The Mongol prince Demchugdongrub was installed as head of state, and a four-colour, seven-stripe flag was chosen as a symbol of ethnic unity between Chinese (yellow), Mongols (blue), Hui (white), and Japanese (red). Like other Japanese propaganda maps from the period, this example (and the text and images on the verso) tells a story of stability, productivity, and harmony. It is dated to the 736th year of the Mongol empire - a reference to Mengjiang's calendar which slotted the region into a non-Chinese political history dating back to the election of Ghenghis Khan in 1206. Colour map (380 x 530 mm) with inset flag at top-right, text and half-tone illustrations on verso, folded as issued. Couple of small splits along folds at margins, couple of negligible holes with printed area unaffected, occasional light browning. A very well-preserved example.

This is a 1936 Antonio Petruccelli and Richard Edes Harrison map of the world highlighting the advance of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific. Depicting from Calcutta to San Francisco and from Alaska to Australia, Petruccelli and Harrison paint Japan… and Korea (then occupied by the Japanese) deep red. Petruccelli and Harrison then use red to indicate areas of land and sea military advance, along with areas of increased economic activity and control. The Japanese established the puppet state of Manchukuo in 1932, after invading northeastern China. Within a year of this map's publication, Imperial Japan would launch the Second Sino-Japanese War, which would expand into the Pacific War with the United States after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Red arrows emphasize Japan's advance through Manchukuo into northern China, while designs that look like ship's wakes, spread in every direction from Japan and overtake Formosa, the Marianas Islands, Caroline, Islands, and Marshall Islands, among others. No country in the region is immune from an increase in Japanese economic influence, as is evident by the starburst patterns along their coastlines. Bar graphs in the lower right corner visually present this 'yen imperialism', as it is referred to here. Petruccelli and Harrison make Japan's economic and expansionist ambitions immediately apparent, and it likely created feelings of foreboding in its viewers when it was published.
