Certaines des planches sont parfois tirées sur des papiers différents avec des variantes. L'exemplaire contient en outre 7 grandes illustrations originales signées dont 2 aquarelles, 3 encres avec rehauts de fusain ou sanguine et 2 dessins dont un avec rehauts de pastel. Il contient également 2 tirages ne faisant pas partie de l'illustration. Très bel exemplaire dans une reliure curieusement non signée portant sur l'un des plats un bas-relief de métal, signé Alexandre (Louis Marie) CHARPENTIER, représentant un gisant. Alexandre Louis Marie CHARPENTIER, sculpteur né à Paris (1856-1909), se distingua dans l'art du médaillé. Etuis solides mais un peu frottés avec quelques manques de papier. Probablement l'exemplaire de LOBEL-RICHE, qui contient son ex-libris en page de garde de chacun des volumes et 5 lignes d'annotations sur BAUDELAIRE avec les initiales LR et daté nov. 1925 pour le premier volume et 2 lignes avec signature pour le second volume. Superbe ensemble. Signé par l'illustrateur.

Printed in red and black in Della Robbia type, original wrappers bound-in, latter front cover darkened. Originally published 1900 during the Dreyfus Affair. Mirbeau, an anarchist had wide public as well as literary and artistic avant-garde appeal both as a journalist and novelist. As an art critic he espoused the work of Rodin, Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Renoir and Bonnard, and was an early advocate of Van Gogh. This novel like Dreiser's, SISTER CARRIE published the same year was also considered decadent; it defied the hypocritical rules of convention, Celestine the main character in this novel is assigned a succession of degrading roles by a society the author despised. Bound by David, raised bands, gilt spine lettering, inner dentelles in art deco style, marbled endpapers. Text in French. A very fresh and bright copy.

Wraps sun-browned at spine, minor wear at edges, original glassine over wrapper chipped and torn at edges with early owner's hand-lettered title in ink at spine torn and partly lacking, text quite good, slight aging, text and plates very clean, sheet with original illustrations with some aging at edges, offsetting to protective paper folder. The edition consisted of 75 copies on Japon Ancien with the plates in four or five states, and 300 copies on Velin d'Arches with plates in two or three states; there were also 42 additional lettered or Roman-numbered copies on Japon Imperial or Arches. This copy is an Hors de Commerce copy similar to the 200 copies on Arches with plates in two states, with the addition of the sheet with original drawings; the limitation leaf cites no other issue which also included an original drawing although there probably were some. One set is with and one without additional small drawings in the lower margin. A number of additional graphics are available.

A unique copy of La Legende des Sexes augmented with erotic drawings by Alméry Lobel-Riche. Lobel-Riche's erotic drawings complement the erotic verse and the erotic tooling to the doublures by Charles Lanöe. The full-page drawings are all on inserted leaves of different paper stock. One drawing is inscribed 'Portes d'enfer' and a further drawing illustrates the poem 'La Chanson du Vieux Moine' suppressed by the author ('supprimé par l'auteur'); Lobel-RIche has added his own note to the blank page: ' . et à demi dévoilée par le dessinateur'. Page 83 / 84 with the poem 'Ballade des Pucelaiges Morts' was never bound in to the present volume. Also included, loosely inserted, is the printed bifolium for the 'Société des Poètes Français' 'manifestation' to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the author of the present volume Edmond Haraucourt (1856 - 1941).

Limited edition and the first illustrated, one of 51 copies (this being no. 34) on papier hollande (from a total edition of 582); 4to (32.5 x 27 cm); illustrated with 24 original engravings after Lobel-Riche in three states, an extra suite of 12 of the plates in three states and an additional signed pen ink drawing, three pages of manuscript notes by Pierre Benoit entitled 'l'Art du Romanicer'; unbound as issued with original publisher's wrappers, in a later orange marbled slipcase. Provenance: G.B. (sticker to inside of wrapper cover). With an original drawing by Lobel-Riche and manuscript essay from Pierre Benoit. L'Atlantide was originally published in 1919 and shortly became a huge success, winning the Grand Prize of the Academie Francaise the same year. Its popularity was largely attributed to the welcome escape Benoit's passionate and exotic novel gave to those suffering from the horrors of WWI.
