"And thou Britain especially Scotland, my dear country, the purest portion of Christ's Church in the world this day, assure thyself, and I assure thee, for I know it, that thy good people are as sheep in the midst of wolves." P. 17. A reformed (Early Presbyterian) anti-Catholic tract by a Scottish minister. In historical context, in 1638 during the year this tract was printed by Aberthany, King Charles Star Chamber sentenced other Puritan writers and pamphlet distributors to public flogging. The King raised an army to combat the Scottish Covenanters, but finding difficulty financing it was forced to call upon Parliament. He receives the briefest of obituaries in the Gentleman's Magazine, July 1840: 'May 10. At Exeter, aged 81, Col. Thomas Abernethie, K.H. on the retired list of the Royal Marines.' 3pp, 4to. Bifolium. On aged and discoloured paper, with the usual damage to the second leaf from the breaking of the seal. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with postmark, to 'Messrs Cox & Son / 20 Bartletts Buildings / Holborn / London'. Signed 'Thos. Abernethie' and docketed 'Maj: Abernethie / 16 March 1811'. Begins: 'Gentlemen / I have requested a Cap. Falcon of the Navy to purchase for me a Qr cask of Madeira - should he [?] and to draw upon you per the Amt. which you will please to honor -'. He continues: 'Lord Wellington is in full pursuit of the French - but I scarcely think he will follow them further than the confines of Portugal - should they escape thither - we have no certain intelligence of the Armies till we receive it in an official shape from England - Cap. Cox is well - we rode together yesterday to see the palace of Queluse [sic] about 8 miles from Lisbon - a very charming spot -'.…

Two anti-Catholic tracts: Ramsay's is theological, and Abernathie "sometime Jesuit, now penitent sinner" is more sensational, and more typical of converted-Catholic tracts. "I speak nothing of their brutish and Sodomistic life, worse than that of the Pagans, described by the Apostle, which although it be not universall thorow all the popes dominions; yet it is common and notorious in the privie chamber (that is Italie) ofthe Babylonish whoore, and to me by auricular confession. It was published in English in 1785 as "History of the Revolution of South-Carolina." and engraved by Thomas Abernethie .Ramsay, a field commander and surgeon, was twice elected South Carolina's representative to the Continental Congress.The French version is engraved by French royal geographer Charles Picquet.Fine detail on the deciding battle of the war, showing the positions of all forces involved, including a key to the precise positioning of British warships. All key sites are identified. Headquarters of the principals are marked, including those of Washington, La Fayette, Rochambeau and Clinton.
