Die Studie Mutterschaft und geistig Arbeit basierte auf einer Befragung von ca. 400 beruflich hervorgetretenen Frauen aus der ganzen Welt, die sich in Sparten wie dem Journalismus, in der Kunst, Musik, Literatur oder Wissenschaft einen Namen gemacht hatten. Mittels eines Fragebogens wurde ermittelt, ob ihnen eine sinnvolle Kombination von Mutterschaft und geistiger Arbeit möglich erscheine. In Anlehnung an Key bewerten Gerhard und Simon die Mutter-Kind-Beziehung als bedeutsam und unersetzbar. Mutterschaft wird nicht nur als Frage privaten Glücks oder Teil individueller Lebensgestaltung behandelt, sondern auch hinsichtlich ihrer staatlichen bzw. nationalen Bedeutung thematisiert. Eine pauschale Lösung für den im Titel der Arbeit anvisierten Konflikt bieten die Wissenschaftlerinnen nicht. Sie fordern dazu auf, individuelle Konzepte, die dem eigenen Talent sowie den Bedürfnissen des Kindes und der Familie entsprechen, zu entwickeln. Wünschenswert erscheint ihnen die Kombinanon von Mutterschaft und geistiger Arbeit nur dann, wenn tatsächlich eine außergewöhnliche Leistungsfähigkeit festgestellt werden könne. Die Resonanz auf die Studie, die 1907 ins Finnische übersetzt wurde und 1908 in einer zweiten Auflage in Deutschland erschien, war groß. Besprechungen von Medizinern, Frauenrechtlerinnen, Soziologen, Volkswirtschaftlern und Politikern (insb. Sozialisten u.
