Auflage. 26,5 x 19,5 cm, red full cloth with gold cover illustration and spine decorations, gilt edges, 422 pages, with numerous splendid illustrations by Ernest Griset. Probably the 2nd, 422-page enlarged edition with the same cover as the first edition (in 1869, with only 244 pp.) --- Binding with signs of wear, ex-libris on inside cover, early dated dedication on front endpaper, only a few sporadic stains. Very good, tight copy with the beautiful illustrations by Ernest Griset. --- Ernest Henri Griset (1843, Boulogne-sur-Mer - 1907, London) is known as the illustrator of numerous children's books and Punch magazine for his humorous animal drawings. Many examples of Griset's work can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Some of his comic work appeared in Punch, where he was briefly on the staff between 1867-9, as well as in its competitor, Fun. He left Punch at the age of twenty four and worked on illustrating Aesop s Fables (1869). Of this work a reviewer noted that "nothing so quaint as these illustrations has appeared since the days of GrandvilleGriset possesses the faculty of investing his animals with human expression, without ever causing them to lose their own identity, and of making them funny without being ridiculous.".
