Bound in brown and black publisher's cloth. 19th century repair with a…new spine in black publisher's cloth. Boards are original, blindstamped and with gilt ornamentation. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. All edges gilt. Although no date is given, the title page within the first book notes it was written 'by The Rev. John Willison, Dundee, Scotland, 1727'. The first book, The Afflicted Man's Companion, gives eighteenth century direction to families visited with sickness: to those sharply afflicted with sickness or long trouble, to children with sickness, to unregenerate persons, to people of God when the Lord is pleased to recover them from sickness and distress, to the unregenerate when recovered from sickness and restored to health, to the sick in a dying condition, and to friends and neighbors of the sick, who are themselves in health for the time. 263 pp. The second book, The Mourner or The Afflicted Relieved, tenderly discusses and advises on grief through different perspectives. The pagination of this second book is continuous from the first, and ends on page 343. The last page is an advertisement for additional publications of the American Tract Society. This copy shows some wear, underlining and annotation within the first book, and is foxed throughout. Binding is tight and sound. Pagination is complete. An intriguing copy. The plaintiff, a Georgia charity, sought payment of a legacy under the will of Gazaway B. Lamar, who died in 1874. Lamar's will ordered his executors to pursue cla…ims against the federal government "for cotton seized during the war, amounting to several hundred thousand dollars, for which suits in the United States Court of Claims and elsewhere were then pending." Before his death, Lamar collected $342,819.80 on those claims. Most of those cotton funds were disbursed before Lamar's death. From the cotton claims collected, Lamar's will bequeathed funds "to be devoted to establishing and sustaining one or more hospitals for colored persons who have been slaves and their descendants, giving preference to those which once belonged to or were hired by me, more especially to provide for the old, decrepit, the blind, the deaf and dumb, the insane. . ." The Georgia Infirmary was disappointed with the small amount received under the will, as very little remained of the cotton funds when Lamar died. The Administrators argue that the will directs the distribution of assets existing only at the time of the testator's death, and so the Infirmary and its representatives [The City of Augusta and the Oglethorpe Institute of Savannah, administering the Infirmary] were entitled only to their share of the cotton funds when Lamar died.
