Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. The definitive history of Flak-Bait, the most accomplished American bomber of the Second World War. Battling flak and enemy fighters over the skies of Europe during World War II, the US Army Air Force Martin B-26 Marauder bomber named "Flak-Bait" completed a remarkable 201 combat missions, a fea…t that made it the highest mission scorer of any Allied medium or heavy bomber. For many years the author has held a special interest in the B-26, and especially those of the 387th Bomb Group. It was during his first visit to the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC, over 20 years ago, where "Flak-Bait's" nose section was on display, that he became interested in what the aircraft had achieved during her illustrious career. Using official World War IIera records, the result is a day-by-day account of the missions it flew, crew lists, flight routes, and weapons dropped, and records any comments made by the various crews during their postmission debriefing. A special photo section features the current restoration display of "Flak-Bait" at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington, DC. Correcting previously held perceptions about the aircraft and its missions, this is the most definitive account of any single World War II aircraft's combat career ever published. AUTHOR: Alan Crouchman has written many aviation articles over the last 35 years, with over 50 published in magazines in the UK and France. He has been involved in researching the Martin B-26 Marauder aircraft for over 40 years and acts as the 387th Bomb Group historian and contact in the UK. Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 8.75 inches by 11.25 inches. [4], 508 pages. Illustrated dust jacket. Illustrations. Research Sources. Select Bibliography. Introduction. The Strategic Bombing Offensive. Notes for Operational Diary.…Operational Diary. Index. Heavy book requiring added shipping costs. Part of book is in a two-column format. Roger A. Freeman (11 May 1928?7 October 2005) was a British military aviation historian specializing in US Eighth Air Force operations during World War II. Freeman recalled a sight in February 1945, the sheer scale of which set him on a course to writing a book about the US Eighth Air Force. After the war, Freeman began writing about agriculture for local publications including the Essex County Standard. He also wrote articles for aviation magazines and started to collate material for his planned book. Much of this included official documents sourced from the United States as well as personal accounts and photographs from USAAF veterans. The book was a success and has been translated into several languages. Freeman followed it up with a series of titles under the same banner, including The Mighty Eighth, The Mighty Eighth War Manual and the Mighty Eighth in Colour. His overall output of some 60 books also included works about the wartime Royal Air Force, individual aircraft studies, airfield histories and profiles of USAAF units ? including the Boxted-based 56th Fighter Group of Freeman's youth. Aside from aviation, he also wrote books in the dialect local to the Dedham area, including I Mind the Time: Country Goings-on and That Were Like This Here. The original Mighty Eighth book helped to galvanize veterans' groups in the US and led to Freeman's appointment as historian and symposium moderator of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society. He was also a consultant for the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force[3] near Savannah, Georgia, in the early 1990s. The museum's study department is called the 'Roger A. Freeman Eighth Air Force Research Center'. In 2012 the American Air Museum at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, Cambridgeshire was established after acquiring the bulk of Freeman's archive of research material, making the photographs available online at the crowd-sourced American Air Museum on-line presence. Meanwhile, his knowledge led to consultancy roles for many TV documentaries and the job of technical adviser for the 1989 David Puttnam/Catherine Wyler film Memphis Belle. The most remarkable and most popular account of WWII aviation depicts the 8th from its arrival in Britain in 1942, to its spread across the country to operate from over 40 bases, on the way to becoming the largest air unit ever committed to battle. An extensively detailed and fully researched account covers intensive bomber and fighter sorties over Europe conducted by over 2,000 aircraft involving over 150,000 men. The exploits of B-17s, B-26s, and P-47s are told, along with little-known explanations of the vastly sophisticated supply chain that kept them flying. Over 700 photos of planes on the ground and in battle action depict formations and strategies, while over 150 full-color illustrations display aircraft group markings. The US 8th Air Force - it did not become known as the "Mighty Eighth" until these books were published and the name stuck - was based in England in the second half of World War II, from where it flew fighter and bomber missions over Europe. In addition to a veteran support back home, the Eighth and its aircraft have been avidly studied in the postwar years. This work chronicles each action which the units flew, the aircraft which took part and the results.
