This book investigates a new waterproof ventilation system for dry freight van containers used for overseas transportation of perishable agricultural commodities. The system was developed in response to a shortage of refrigerated containers and the high costs associated with their ownershi…p and operation. The system incorporates a marine plug that allows air to enter the cargo compartment while keeping seawater out. Additionally, electrically powered exhaust blowers are mounted on the rear doors to pull air into the front of the van container and through the load. The author presents the results of preliminary testing and two overseas shipping tests, one with grapefruit and the other with watermelons. The results of the grapefruit test shipment were comparable to those of the refrigerated van containers shipped at the same time, with no damage to boxes or fruit. The watermelon test shipment arrived in England in good condition with only a 2% loss, significantly lower than the 10% loss experienced by subsequent loads shipped in refrigerated van containers. The book concludes that this waterproof marine ventilation system is a feasible method of transporting perishable agricultural products to overseas markets when the ambient air temperatures are low enough to cool the fruit without chilling it. The system offers potential cost savings for shippers due to lower freight rates and increased payload capacity compared to refrigerated van containers.
