Ajouter au panierFirst Edition. Large quarto, 14 pp. Cloth-backed decorated boards, spine label. Tipped in photo and halftone illus. Inscribed by Oscar Lewis to Louise Barr (?). Somewhat whimsical piece created for Bender's 75th birthday, but he died before printing was completed. Limited to 250 copies distributed to friends. Wonderful productio…n as one would expect from this great press. Included is a Book Club of California folded sheet on Bender, as well as a color print: Albert Bender and other benders" (which smacks of racist humor). Spine is darkened and soiled, boards warped and sunned at edges; some offsetting, and a thick ink used for the inscription, else very good. The scarce print about fine.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Near fine. Limited Edition. One of 300 copies, folio size, 47 pp. John Henry Nash (1871-1947) was one of the pre-eminent printers in the early part of the 20th century, printing high-quality editions at his printshop in San Francisco. He quickly gained a reputation for exceptional precision and attention to det…ail from his earliest years as a printer, when he was in complete charge of design and production for Paul Elder under the Tomoye Press imprint, and later formed a part of the firm Taylor, Nash and Taylor. By 1916, he was ready to "become his own master" (n.b., Harlan, p. 23) and produced some of the most technically-proficent books of the time. As with many other printers of this era, with most of America being (ast least somewhat) religious, Nash produced several outstanding works with a religious theme. In this work, he presents, in his usual inimitable style, the long poem by George Sterling (which would be his first published work). In 1902 Sterling sent the manuscript to Ambrose Bierce, "his one-man court of final judgment", who would make many substantial edits - most of which Sterling incorporated into the final form (n.b., quote from the book's Introduction, p. 5). With the facsimile of the corrected manuscript included, one can easily see how influential was Bierce on the then-young poet. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full marbled paper boards with a paper spine label lettered in black, each page of text surrounded by red ruled and mitred borders, elaborate title page decoration by William Wilke, the Introduction and Memory both with three-line initial capitals; handset Caslon roman and italic (Old Style per the BCC entry) type on Worthy Signature paper, folio size (14 1/2" by 9 1/2"), pagination: [1-3] 4-33 [1, blank] [1, divisional title] [12 pages of facsimile manuscript]; limited edition of 300 copies, this no. 181. ___CONDITION: About near fine, the boards clean, straight corners (the bottom corners lightly rubbed), a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light wear at the head and tail of the spine and offsetting to the free endpapers. ___CITATIONS: Harlan, Robert D., "John Henry Nash, The Biography of a Career"; O'Day, p. 56; BCC 100, no. 29. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Wilke, William (illustrateur).

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Near fine. Limited Edition. No. 10 of 60 copies, sixteenmo size, [11] pp. Poet and playwright George Sterling (1869-1926) was much acclaimed on the Pacific coast; a prolific poet, Sterling was part of the group of writers and artists in the San Francisco Bay Area and then in Carmel that included Jack London, Jo…aquin Miller, Mary Austin, and Robinson Jeffers. In addition to poetry, Sterling wrote several plays, and he was a regular performer in the Bohemian Club's theatrical productions, held in the Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, California. This tribute to Sterling is written by Albert M. Bender (1866-1941), an influential book collector and patron of the arts in San Francisco, who supported artists such as Ansel Adams and Diego Rivera. It was printed by The Windsor Press, which was begun by Cecil and James Johnson who came to San Francisco in 1924; "while fine printing was secondary to commercial work, they managed to turn out an astonishing number of charming books and broadsides during the nineteen years the Press existed" (Magee 21). The quintessence of early twentieth-century California Fine Press printing and scarce in the marketplace; we find no copies online as of this writing. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black cloth with grey-green paper boards, white paper label with black ruled border, decoration, and lettering on the front board, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with black ruled borders and decorations, decorative headpiece in black on the first page of text; sixteenmo size (6.5" by 4.5"), 11 unnumbered pages, one of 60 copies, this number 10. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; boards are clean with a few light spots of soiling, a few spots of soiling to the paper label, light rubbing to the tail of the spine; overall a lovely example of a scarce item. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Ajouter au panierNo binding. Etat : Near fine. Folio, single leaf folded once to form [4] pp. Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn (1872-1964) was an advocate of free speech and higher education based on the idea of a self-governing community, with advisors teaching through tutorials instead of lectures, and with an emphasis on the "great books"; he opened…the "Experimental College" at the University of Wisconsin in 1927. Unfortunately, the experiment failed, with the students developing a reputation for "radicalism and wanton anarchy" (perhaps an idea ahead of its time?), resulting in the closing of the College in 1932. This scarce BCC broadside, printed by John Henry Nash, announces three lectures to be given by him: "The Evolution of Spirit," "The College and the Community," and "The Poetry of James Stephens." Undated, but we believe it was printed in 1927 based on a mention in the BCC 100 of the first lecture Dr. Meiklejohn gave: "In 1925, under the auspices of the Club but not connected with any planned series, Dr. Alexander Meiklejohn spoke at the Palace Hotel on 'Democracy and Excellence' " (cf p. xiv, BCC 100). The broadside states "Dr. Meiklejohn's lecture before the members two years ago was so favorably received, and so many expressed a desire to hear the speaker again, that the Club takes special pleasure in announcing this new series of lectures." A quick look at the calendar for 1927 confirms that July 27, August 3, and August 10 did all fall on a Wednesday, as the broadside states. Not listed in either O'Day or the BCC 100; seemingly scarce with none currently in the marketplace, and a search of OCLC locating one copy, at Cal. ___DESCRIPTION: A single leaf folded once to four pp., the announcement on the lecture series on the first page in black and red, surrounded by a red ruled border, two inside pages blank, on the final page "The Book Club of California wishes to express its appreciation to the trustees of the Temple Emanu-El for the use of its beautiful building for these lectures" and, beneath, "San Francisco: John Henry Nash, Printer"; folio size measuring 12" by 8.5". ___CONDITION: This delicate broadside could almost be called fine; the paper is clean, the inks bright, it is free of soil and edgewear other than a single, short closed tear to the top margin of the first page; some light age-toning, else fine. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
