Before the project, only a few specimens of smaller mammals were found in Fayum Province, and scientists previously assumed smaller mammals weren't preserved there. However, the Yale Peabody Museum team recovered abundant vertebrate fossils of microfaunal size by using a combination of screening unconsolidated sands, quarrying clay-rich channel sands, and collecting wind-eroding unconsolidated sands.
