Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Carlo Fontana (1634-1714) was a Roman artist of the late Baroque era. Apprentice of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, he was an urbanist, an engineer, an architect and a thinker. The present opus is his most famous work, which is known to be created in 1676 but published in the final version in 1696. It is a book that describes the water supply, including the engineering constructions as pipes, aqueducts, cisterns, and fountains. The engravings based on the Fontana drawings were made by Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729), a papal architect and engraver. Serving as a principe of the St. Luke`s Academy in Rome Carlo Fontana remains well known as a prominent teacher. The illustrated book on hydraulics and hydrostatics was probably in wide use as a textbook for his famous students. The fountain systems described in the book became popular among the architects of European villas, especially in France.
