Presents "Tabboo! 1982-88". A gem of a book. Chronicles the model/muse as artist/painter, the observer as observed, the photographer/portraitist as an iconic portrait-subject himself. Sums up his years, from 1982 to 1988, as a cult NYC icon: Legendary performer, painter, designer, puppeteer, and muse. Born Stephen Tashjian, he re-named himself, singularly, as "Tabboo!" - with the double letter B (to go with the double letter O) and the exuberant exclamation point. His "Go Figure" , transgressive art consists of paintings that brilliantly mimic the classic High Expressionist style - without the anguish, but instead with a joyful, playful, and appealing sexiness. "The book displays historical ephemera, including homemade flyers for performances at iconic clubs along with the artist's paintings. Additionally, an Essay on the 'Glamorous Life' by Jarrett Earnest explicates the thematic concerns of the Catalog. Underscores the joy of creating and living exuberantly. He moved to New York City's East Village in 1982 and quickly established himself as a fixture in its art-and-drag scene. In the style of fellow Boston School artists Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson, and Mark Morrisroe, he chronicled the Zeitgeist with a raw, diaristic approach. In his work, dizzying visuals of nightlife and its cast of characters accompany affectionate portraits of his friends. Seedy glamor and high camp meet in a jubilant fusion of collage, paintings, and photography. Not one to be an aloof observer, he was himself photographed by Goldin, Morrisroe, and Pierson as well as such influential artist/photographers as Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, David Armstrong, and Philip-Lorca diCorcia. Emblematizes the experimentation central to the mythology of the glamorous underground culture". An absolute "must-have" title for collectors of Tabboo! . This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 1200 copies, indicated as such on the Back Copyright Page. Although not called for, it is very boldly and beautifully signed (in black pen-marker) on the half-title page by Tabboo! . Then, he just as boldly and beautifully signed on the same page (in gold pen-marker) with his real name: "Stephen Tashjian". This title is a cult classic and bona fide NYC collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: He did NOT sign most copies of the book. As such, this is surely a collectible keepsake of the artist. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant American artists of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1949172570. Signed by Author(s). …
