Sie hat mit ihren beiden Vorgängerinnen am Nord- und Südportal des Baptiste-riums so wenig gemein und fällt auch sonst so sehr aus dem Rahmen der bestehenden Traditionen heraus, daß die Entstehung ihres revolutionären Konzeptes noch heute als rätselhaft gilt. Der vorliegende Kunststück-Band versucht das Rätsel durch eine Neuinterpretation der Vorgeschichte der Tür zu lösen. Er zeigt, daß Ghibertis Innovation in gewisser Weise vorprogrammiert war. Ghiberti war bei der Konzeption seiner ersten, heute am Nordportal befindlichen Tür (1403-24) gezwungen gewesen, sich an das gotische Rahmensystem der seit 1336 vorhandenen Südportaltüre Andrea Pisanos zu halten. Er hatte seine Bildideen nur unter Inkaufnahme eines eklatanten ästhetischen Widerspruches zwischen Rahmen und Gerahmtem ausdrücken können. Michelangelos Juengstes Gericht war - so ergibt die Analyse der einschlaegigen Dokumente - urspruenglich fuer die Eingangswand der Sixtina, als Pendant eines fuer die Altarwand bestimmten Engelssturzfreskos geplant. Erst auf Veranlassung des Kuenstlers selbst, der die Verwirklichung seiner Intentionen durch das Eingangsportal behindert sah, wurde es an die Altarwand gemalt (wo es der Logik der bestehenden Bilderfolgen widerspricht und das Engelsturzfresko hinfaellig machte). Dem Engelsturz-Weltgerichtsprojekt gingen vermutlich zwei andere, auf den ikonographischen status quo bezogene Pendantprojekte voraus. Die waehrend der Planungsgeschichte entwickelten bildkuenstlerischen Ideen wurden in das Weltgerichtkonzept weitgehend integriert und machen die wichtigsten Besonderheiten des vollendeten Freskos erklaerbar.
