Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of pneumatic transportation, a system of propelling vehicles through enclosed tubes using air pressure. The author takes readers on a journey through the history of this innovative concept, exploring its origins in the early 19th century with pioneers like Medhurst, Vallance, and Pinkus. The book examines the development of atmospheric railways and their limitations, highlighting the crucial role of airtight tunnels and piston-carriages in overcoming the challenges of leakage and high pressures. The narrative then shifts to the groundbreaking work of the Pneumatic Dispatch Company in London, charting the successful implementation of pneumatic tubes for mail delivery, with connections established between railway stations and the General Post Office. The book details the technical aspects of the system, including the machinery used to create and manipulate air pressure, the design of the tubes and carriages, and the efficiency of the process. Further exploration delves into the potential of pneumatic transport for passengers, showcasing the first public trial of a pneumatic passenger railway at Sydenham in 1864. The book highlights the safety, comfort, and speed achieved in this system, showcasing its ability to handle inclines and curves beyond the capability of conventional railways. The author concludes by discussing the ambitious plans for a pneumatic passenger railway in London, encompassing a route under the Thames River, and examining the potential benefits and advantages of this technology over traditional locomotive-based railways. The book provides a unique historical and technical account of pneumatic transport, shedding light on the evolution and potential of this intriguing mode of transportation.
