Vincent Debiais offers some interesting observations by comparing medieval Latin inscriptions from the West with Byzantine epigraphic traditions. The second section of the book bears the title Methods of Editing Byzantine Inscriptions: while the paper of Peter Schreiner discusses the urgent necessity of creating a new epigraphic initiative within Byzantine Studies, Walter Koch describes the Western medieval inscription projects in detail. Both Guglielmo Cavallo and Erkki Sironen discuss editorial guidelines while Charlotte Roueche stresses the advantages of creating online-corpora, and Joel Kalvesmaki describes his recently published epigraphic font Athena Ruby. Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - This book offers the first complete overview of Byzantine poetry from the 4th to the 15th century. By bringing together 22 scholars, it explores the development of poetic trends and the interaction between poetry and society throughout the Byzantine millennium; it addresses a wide range of issues conc…erning the writing and reading of poetry (such as style, language, metrics, function, and circulation); and it surveys a large number of texts by looking closely at their place within the social and cultural milieus of their authors. Overall, the volume aims to enhance our understanding of Byzantine poetry and shed light on its important place in Byzantine literary culture. Contributors are Eirini Afentoulidou, Gianfranco Agosti, Roderick Beaton, Floris Bernard, Carolina Cupane, Kristoffel Demoen, Ivan Drpic, Jürgen Fuchsbauer, Antonia Giannouli, Martin Hinterberger, Wolfram Hörandner, Elizabeth Jeffreys, Michael Jeffreys, Marc Lauxtermann, Ingela Nilsson, Emilie van Opstall, Andreas Rhoby, Kurt Smolak, Foteini Spingou, Maria Tomadaki, Ioannis Vassis, Nikos Zagklas.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The present volume is the written result of a workshop with the title Die kulturhistorische Bedeutung byzantinischer Epigramme [the role of Byzantine epigrams for cultural history] held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna on December 1-2, 2006. It was the purpose of…this event (organised by W. Horandner and A. Rhoby) to deepen the research on the Byzantine epigram. Besides, the present volume is a parergon of the Vienna based project Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Uberlieferung [Byzantine epigrams on objects]. The volume starts with an introduction in which a definition of the terminus epigram and an overview of the current state of research are given. The following articles deal not only with philological questions but also with the omnipresent interaction of word and image in Byzantium. Well established opinions, e.g. regarding the epigram on the staurotheke of Limburg, are questioned. Moreover, the question is discussed why several Byzantine artefacts kept in Venice and their inscriptions were copied and imitated at the beginning of the 16th century. A concluding article deals with literary and non-literary medieval Latin epigrams. At the end of the volume tables of images and a general index are provided. The present volume contains the contributions to a workshop entitled "Die kulturhistorische Bedeutung byzantinischer Epigramme" (The role of Byzantine epigrams for cultural history) that was held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna from December 1-2, 2006. This event, organised by W. Horandner and A." Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Ajouter au panierPaperback, vii + 413 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503578866. Summary It is only in recent years that Byzantine poetry - a long-neglected aspect of Byzantine literature - has attracted the attention of philologists, literary and cultural historians. This holds true especially for the…poetry written in middle and late Byzantium.Though many collections of poems are available in modern critical editions, a considerable amount of texts still remains completely unedited or accessible only in outdated and unreliable editions. Moreover, many works of this period have never been studied thoroughly with regard to their cultural impact on society. Issues of authorship and patronage, function, literary motives, generic qualities, and manuscripts still await further study. This volume aims to take a step to fill this gap. Although it includes studies on poetry from the early tenth to the fifteenth centuries, the main focus is placed on the Komnenian and Palaeologan times. It presents editions of completely unknown texts, such as a twelfth-century cycle of epigrams on John Klimax. It includes studies on various types of poetry, including didactic, occasional, and even poetry written for liturgical purposes. By analysing these works and placing them within their literary and socio-cultural context, we can draw conclusions about the cultural tastes of the Byzantines and acquire a more nuanced picture of middle and late Byzantine poetry.
