The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "A gallstone (also called cholelithiasis) is a crystalline concretion formed within the gallbladder by accretion of bile components. These calculi are formed in the gallbladder but may distally pass into other parts of the biliary tract such as the cystic duct, common bile duct, pancreatic duct or the ampulla of Vater. Rarely, in cases of severe inflammation, gallstones may erode through the gallbladder into adherent bowel potentially causing an obstruction termed gallstone ileus. Presence of gallstones in the gallbladder may lead to acute cholecystitis, an inflammatory condition characterized by retention of bile in the gallbladder and often secondary infection by intestinal microorganisms, predominantly Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Bacteroides species. Presence of gallstones in other parts of the biliary tract can cause obstruction of the bile ducts, which can lead to serious conditions such as ascending cholangitis or pancreatitis. Either of these two conditions can be life-threatening and are therefore considered to be medical emergencies." From an obituary posted on-line: "Dr. Schoenfield served as associate professor of medicine and consultant in gastroenterology on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic for seven years. He became a professor of medicine in residence at UCLA from 1972 to 1999 (now emeritus). He was the director of gastroenterology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for 25 years, where he received the chief resident's teaching award, the president's award, and the pioneer of medicine award. Les received his pioneer of medicine award for his cutting-edge research into the cause and treatment of gallstones. In the research laboratory, he studied bile acids and their role in the development of gallstones. In the 1980's he was the director of the National Cooperative Gallstone Study, a large, multi-centered study that evaluated the treatment of gallstones with oral medications. This study ultimately led to the approval of oral medications for the treatment of gallstones." From an on-line posting: Dr. Craig "worked as an ophthalmic illustrator at Baylor College of Medicine from 1972-1983, in addition to painting for CIBA and then Novartis.Dr. Craig was Senior Artist and Consultant for Clinical Symposia, a contributor to the NovaCON Disease Education Series (CD-ROM) as well as the Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations until 2006. Dr. Craig received his medical degree and a postgraduate degree in ophthalmology from The University of Texas medical Branch, Galveston." Good. Cover has some wear and soiling.

The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "Osteoporosis ("porous bones) is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone are altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass (average of young, healthy adults) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; the term "established osteoporosis" includes the presence of a fragility fracture. The disease may be classified as primary type 1, primary type 2, or secondary. The form of osteoporosis most common in women after menopause is referred to as primary type 1 or postmenopausal osteoporosis. Primary type 2 osteoporosis or senile osteoporosis occurs after age 75 and is seen in both females and males at a ratio of 2: 1. Secondary osteoporosis may arise at any age and affect men and women equally. This form results from chronic predisposing medical problems or disease, or prolonged use of medications such as glucocorticoids, when the disease is called steroid-or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. The risk of osteoporosis fractures can be reduced with lifestyle changes and in those with previous osteoporosis related fractures, medications. Lifestyle change includes diet, exercise, and preventing falls. The utility of calcium and vitamin D is questionable in most. Bisphosphonates are useful in those with previous fractures from osteoporosis but are of minimal benefit in those who have osteoporosis but no previous fractures. Osteoporosis is a component of the frailty syndrome." From a medical school on-line posting: "Frederick S. Kaplan, M.D. is The Isaac & Rose Nassau Professor of Orthopaedic Molecular Medicine and Chief of the Division of Molecular Orthopaedic Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is an alumnus of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1976), and was Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at The Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania and The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia from 1980 to 1981. Kaplan was a Hartford Foundation Research Fellow in human genetics and molecular biology from 1989 to 1991 in the laboratory of his mentor and friend Dr. Michael Zasloff. This experience led to his exploration of the mechanisms for heterotopic bone formation and skeletal metamorphosis in several disabling childhood diseases. In 1989, Kaplan, an orthopaedic surgeon, met a child with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare and disabling disorder in which the body forms a second skeleton of heterotopic bone. Motivated to know and do more, Kaplan began a pioneering second career on the molecular genetics of heterotopic ossification, work that led to the discovery of the FOP gene, to the description of the molecular pathophysiology of skeletal metamorphosis in humans, to the discovery of progressive osseous heteroplasia (another disorder of heterotopic ossification) and its causative gene and pathophysiology. Wraps. Netter, Frank H. (illustrateur). Presumed first edition/first printing. [2], 32, [6] p. Includes illustrations. Most illustrations in color. Bibliography. The Novartis Foundation produces Symposia, in which groups of leading scientists from a range of topics across biology, chemistry and medicine assembled to present papers and discuss results. The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "A congenital disorder, or congenital disease, is a condition existing at birth and often before birth[citation needed], or that develops during the first month of life (neonatal disease), regardless of causation. Of these diseases, those characterized by structural deformities are termed "congenital anomalies" and involve defects in or damage to a developing fetus. A congenital disorder may be the result of genetic abnormalities, the intrauterine (uterus) environment, errors of morphogenesis, infection, or a chromosomal abnormality. The outcome of the disorder will depend on complex interactions between the pre-natal deficit and the post-natal environment. [1] Animal studies indicate that the mother's (and possibly but less probably the father's) diet, vitamin intake, and glucose levels prior to ovulation and conception have long-term effects on fetal growth and adolescent and adult disease. [2] Congenital disorders vary widely in causation and abnormalities. Any substance that causes birth defects is known as a teratogen. Some disorders can be detected before birth through prenatal diagnosis (screening). The term "congenital"[3] disorder does not necessarily refer to a genetic disorder despite the similarity of the words. Some congenital conditions are idiopathic, and sometimes the word "congenital" is used synonymously with "idiopathic"; but careful usage prefers to reserve the word "congenital" for conditions to which the literal sense of the word applies (that is, those whose pathophysiology has existed since the neonatal period)." From a 1976 news article posted on-line: "Dr. Alfred Swanson thought he wanted to be an attorney. But when he was in prelaw studies, he developed an ear infection. The doctor who treated him was so impressed by the questions Swanson asked that he advised the youth to switch professions. There are 100, 000 or so people around the world who are direct beneficiaries of Swanson's decision to do so. That is the number of patients whose hands have been freed of deforming arthritis through an operation developed by the 53-year-old orthopedic surgeon from Grand Rapids, Mich. Simply explained, the procedure involves replacing crippled joints with silicone implants. One specialist in the field, Sweden's Prof. Erik Moberg, says, "No one has tested and developed his ideas with such drive and thoroughness as Dr. Swanson has." Swanson is nothing if not driven. His curriculum vitae the play-by-play of his professional life runs 43 single-spaced pages. It lists memberships in 32 professional associations, 39 appointments to study groups and charitable organizations, 95 published papers, 317 presentations and lectures and such awards as the Medal of Honor from South Vietnam. " From Wikipedia: "Frank H. Netter (25 April 1906 17 September 1991) was an American surgeon and celebrated medical illustrator. The first edition of his Atlas of Human Anatomy his "personal Sistine Chapel" was published in 1989; he was a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine where he was first published in 1957. Frank Henry Netter was born in Manhattan at 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue, and grew up wanting to be an artist. In high school, he obtained a scholarship to study at the National Academy of Design, doing so at night while continuing high school. After further studying at the Art Students League of New York and with private teachers, he began a commercial art career, quickly achieving success and doing work for the Saturday Evening Post and The New York Times. However, his family disapproved of a career as an artist.

From WIkipdeia: "Cytogenetics is a branch of genetics that is concerned with the study of the structure and function of the cell, especially the chromosomes. [1] It includes routine analysis of G-banded chromosomes, other cytogenetic banding techniques, as well as molecular cytogenetics such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH)." From Wikipedia: "William Leo Nyhan (born March 13, 1926) is an American physician who is currently Professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine in La Jolla, California. He has also held positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, University of Miami School of Medicine. In addition, Nyhan has served on a number of advisory committees, pediatric advisory boards, and on the board of research foundations. His over 56 years of experience and interests in areas of research span a wide variety of disorders of amino acid metabolism. These include 4-Hydroxybutyric aciduria, 3-methylglutaconyl-Co A hydratase deficiency, multiple carboxylase deficiency, methylmalonic acidemia, and propionic acidemia. He is most-widely known as the co-discoverer of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Currently, he is involved in the ongoing development of tandem mass spectrometry for use in newborn screening and research, and is involved in identifying the cause(s) of progressive neurologic disability in MMA after liver transplantation. Nyhan has studied the neuropathology of propionic acidemia (PA) including the manifestation of basal ganglia infarction and the neurologic non-metabolic presentation of PA. Current research includes evaluating the use of dichloroacetate (DCA) in treating a broad range of patients with mitochondrial disease leading to lactic acidemia." Good. From Wikipedia: "A hospital-acquired infection (HAI) or nosocomial infection is an infection whose development is favored by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated roughly 1.7 million hospital-associated infections, from all types of microorganisms, including bacteria, combined, cause or contribute to 99, 000 deaths each year. In Europe, where hospital surveys have been conducted, the category of Gram-negative infections are estimated to account for two-thirds of the 25, 000 deaths each year. Nosocomial infections can cause severe pneumonia and infections of the urinary tract, bloodstream and other parts of the body. Many types are difficult to attack with antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance is spreading to Gram-negative bacteria that can infect people outside the hospital. HAI is sometimes expanded as healthcare-associated infection to emphasize that infections can be correlated with health care in various settings (not just hospitals)." The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. Blood pressure is summarised by two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole). This equals the maximum and minimum pressure, respectively. There are different definitions of the normal range of blood pressure. Normal blood pressure at rest is within the range of 100 140mmHg systolic (top reading) and 60 90mmHg diastolic (bottom reading). High blood pressure is said to be present if it is often at or above 140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is classified as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension; about 90 95% of cases are categorized as "primary hypertension" which means high blood pressure with no obvious underlying medical cause. The remaining 5 10% of cases (secondary hypertension) are caused by other conditions that affect the kidneys, arteries, heart or endocrine system. Hypertension puts strain on the heart, leading to hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease if not treated. Hypertension is also a major risk factor for stroke, aneurysms of the arteries (e.g. aortic aneurysm), peripheral arterial disease and is a cause of chronic kidney disease. A moderately high arterial blood pressure is associated with a shortened life expectancy while mild elevation is not. Dietary and lifestyle changes can improve blood pressure control and decrease the risk of health complications, although drug treatment is still often necessary in people for whom lifestyle changes are not enough or not effective." From Wikipedia: " Aram V. Chobanian (born August 8, 1929) served as president ad interim of Boston University from 2003 until June 9, 2005, when, in recognition of Chobanian s work, the Board of Trustees voted to remove ad interim from his title and designate him the ninth president of Boston University. He had succeeded controversial B.U. President John Silber (1971-1996), who had become chancellor in 1996, but had stepped down as chancellor and reassumed the presidency on an interim basis after B.U. President Jon Westling (1996-2002) resigned to return to teaching. Dr. Chobanian is the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Hypertension of the American Heart Association. A cardiologist, Chobanian holds a B.A. from Brown University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Before accepting the interim position in 2003, he was the Dean of the Boston University School of Medicine.
