Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. Among his reforms were the removal of corrupt defence contractors, improved medical care, submitting a revision of the Articles of War to Parliament to tighten discipline throughout the Navy, uniforms for commissioned officers, the transfer of the Marines from Army to Navy authority, and a system for rating ships according to their number of guns. Corners lightly bumped and rubbed, leather title label scuffed top edge. From the library of book collector,George John Dupuis, with his Heraldic bookplate (Suffield, 1839) to inside front cover. Very good condition. Describes the voyage to the Hawaiian Islands to return the bodies of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu, who had died of measles on a visit to England. The Blonde was captained by George Anson Byron, 7th Lord Byron and the cousin of the poet. The crew included the botanist James Macrae, the naturalist Andrew Bloxam and the artist Robert Dampier. The ship's party visited a volcano and the place of death of Captain Cook, and the royal tomb. from which they took "almost all that remained of the ancient deities of the Islands". The book was compiled by Maria Graham, another cousin of Captain Byron, from the records of the ship's chaplain Richard Bloxam. Kamehameha ll of Hawaii and his queen, Kamamalu, were on a visit to London in 1824 when they both died of the measles, for which they had no immunity. This voyage, with the cousin of the poet Lord George Gordon Byron in command, was undertaken by the British government specifically to return their bodies to the Hawaiian Islands.The work contains a history of the late King's visit to London, a resume of the discovery of and visits to Hawaii by British explorers, as well as the main narrative, compiled by Maria Graham from the journals kept by the naturalist (Bloxam) and from other official papers.
