Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. In the early sixties at the Royal College of Art in London, three extraordinary personalities collided to reshape contemporary art and literature. Barrie Bates (who would become Billy Apple in November 1962) was an ambitious young graphic designer from New Zealand, who transformed himself into o…ne of pop art's pioneers. At the same time, his friend and fellow student David Hockney - young, Northern and openly gay - was making his own waves in the London art world. Bates and Hockney travelled together, bleached their hair together, and, despite being two of London's rising art stars, almost failed art school together. And in the middle of it all was the secretary of the Royal College's Painting School - an aspiring young novelist called Ann Quin. Quin ghost-wrote her lover Bates's dissertation and collaborated with him on a manifesto, all the while writing Berg: the experimental novel that would establish her as one of the British literary scene's most exciting new voices. Taking us back to London's art scene in the late fifties and early sixties, award-winning writer Anthony Byrt illuminates a key moment in cultural history and tackles big questions: Where did Pop and conceptual art come from? How did these three remarkable young outsiders change British culture? And what was the relationship between revolutions in personal and sexual identities and these major shifts in contemporary art? From the Royal College to Coney Island and Madison Avenue, encountering R. D. Laing and Norman Mailer, Shirley Clarke and Larry Rivers, The Mirror Steamed Over is a remarkable journey through a pivotal moment in contemporary culture. The untold story of how a group of young outsiders reinvented art in early sixties London. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Award-winning writer delivers a pulse-pounding espionage thriller. Missing soldiers, MI6 secrets and European partisans collide in a deadly game where the lines between lies and reality are fast disintegrating. In the dying days of the Second World War, a new conflict is about to ignite.May, 1945…: After fighting to liberate Europe from the Nazis, Tito's Yugoslav Army and Allied forces have come to a tense standoff in the city of Trieste. Every day, locals with fascist and Nazi ties are disappearing, arrested by Yugoslav soldiers. Meanwhile the Allies watch on, reluctant to become mired in yet another conflict. But when rumours circulate that New Zealand soldiers are among the missing, the stakes begin to rise.A British MI6 agent and a New Zealand intelligence officer must uncover the truth behind the rumours. But the schisms in the city are becoming harder to cross, and one wealthy family keeps getting in their way. In a mission where moral lines are hopelessly blurred and violence is a necessity, deciding whether they can trust their sources or even one another becomes a matter of life and death. Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In April 2011, Anthony Byrt was living in Berlin and building a career as a critic, writing about the world of contemporary art for magazines like Frieze and Artforum International. Then one day his world turned upside down. A baby boy, two weeks in intensive care, and Byrt, his wife and new-born son… suddenly found themselves booked on a one-way trip home to New Zealand. 'This model world' is a portrait of what Byrt found when he came back. Built around hundreds of hours spent in galleries, artists' studios and on the road from Brisbane to Detroit to Venice, this is a deeply personal journey into the contemporary New Zealand art world and the global world it inhabits. 242 pages.

Paperback. Etat : Good. In 2013, City Gallery Wellington presented the exhibition New Revised Edition which investigated painting in the digital age. Chartwell's Fallin', by Nick Austin, "tests the limits of the idea of painting as a window on the world: rain represented by string, falls in apostrophes on a flat painted backgrou…nd. " (City Gallery Wellington 2013). Austin exhibited alongside Andrew Barber, John Ward Knox and Nicola Farquhar. The exhibition was a response to the 2007 Adam Art Gallery show Four Times Painting, which explored painting's relation to time, and featured Simon Ingram, Julian Dashper, Isobel Thom, and Shane Cotton. Works from the Chartwell Collection were also included in that exhibition including by Julian Dashper and Simon Ingram. Mark on back where sticker has been removed. 71 pages.
