The author was among the first to challenge this practice, asserting the origin of these fevers was due to contagion and not miasma. He describes in detail the pernicious symptoms of these fevers, rejecting the dominant theory that they were amenable to treatment by the then highly fashionable Peruvian bark, known as cinchona. Instead, the author's preferred method of treatment was bloodletting and other less drastic interventions.
