A BLISTERING ACCOUNT OF A YOUNG MAN IN EXILE AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF THE SRI LANKAN CIVIL WAR Suspecting that he s getting involved with the liberation movement of the Tamil Tigers at the peak of Sri Lanka s civil war, Nishant s parents sell their land to pay for his illegal immigration across the world to the promised safe haven of Canada. Thus begins the ordeal of a young man, who is traded from one agent to another, smuggled across or sent back from many a border, encountering on the way numerous dispossessed refugees like himself from various parts of South Asia and Africa. While much has been written about the harrowing struggles of refugees in their country of birth or in the country of asylum, Where God Began employs wry humour tempered with compassion to explore the complex realities and implications of the journey itself. Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - 'These stories by Appadurai Muttulingam are serious, funny and piercingly honest. Through retelling the stories of the ordinary, common man in his daily struggles for survival, the characters in these stories force us to take a second look at ourselves; they force us to consider ourselves in the shoes of folks who face social, economic and political hardships in their lives.'Appadurai Muttulingam's writing style reminds one of R.K. Narayan. He uses terse, sinewy sentences and doesn't bother the reader with gratuitous language or details. His mission is to narrate a story, and he does it in a take-it-or-leave-it manner of folk tales, in which logic and superfluous information are sacrificed for the sake of a delightful read and a universal message.'MOHAMMED NASEEHU ALI, Author of The Prophet of Zongo Street.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - 'Appadurai Muttulingam's short stories, translated from Tamil to English, are little jewels packed with many riches. Appadurai's characters take us into the heart of the human condition where love guides them, for better or for worse. One can't help but be moved.'DOLLY REISMAN, Writer, Canada'With each Appadurai Muttulingam story, you enter what feels like an intimate circle of seekers seated around a fire. These tales have a fable-like quality: timeless and richly imaginative. And yet, Muttulingam's wicked humor grounds his work in modernity, while the poignant notes he strikes deliver urgency. Rarely is so much wisdom delivered in so sly and entertaining a manner. The stories have a way of transporting you from your dull, mundane existence. It is a journey worth taking.'GERI MODELL, Writer, USA.…
