Volume two is illustrated with a frontispiece and seventy-eight images across sixty-six plates. Collated complete. A study depicting life in the period of English history which may legitimately be described as the Age of Johnson, from 1709 to 1784. From his experiences as a small child being "touch for the evil" by Queen Anne, to the third decade of the reign of George III, and the triumphant election which established the Younger Pitt in power. Samuel Johnson, often called Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. This work explores his life and the historical and social context of his experiences, being a description of conditions rather than a critical study of the era. Edited by Arthur Stanley Turberville, a British historian who was Professor of Modern History at the University of Leeds. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original price-clipped dust wrappers are smart with light wea to the extremities. Sunning to the spine of volume one with light chipping to the extremities of volume two. The odd small mark.
