Ajouter au panierUnbound. Etat : Near Fine. Two parts of a title page from an early version of Willemin's work that have been cut apart and mounted on a blank sheet of paper. On the lower portion of the printed page is the author's signature accompanying a note about plates for the next issue. The blank sheet and the title portions have some creases and some small one half inch or less closed tears. French engraver and antiquarian Nicholas Xavier Willemin (1763-1833) established his reputation with a book long popular with French theater designers about the clothing of ancient Greece and Rome. The project identified on this title page, and which occupied Willemin's efforts through the end of his career, focused on French decorative arts and architecture from the medieval and Renaissance periods. This influential publication was issued in parts, beginning in 1806 and continuing until completed by the author's daughter in 1839, following his death. The title page here is hand-numbered as issue "Livraison" 45. Willemin's note about the plates and variations in the title spelling and exact phrasing compared with other known examples, suggest an early date. Unlike most other versions, this subtitle includes the phrase "colored by hand," and this issue was published in Manheim. Artaria, a long-lasting firm with operations in several European cities, was also responsible for the Paris editions of Willemin's publication. This title page dedicates the work to the Duc de Berry the last of whom died in 1820 . The blank paper has a watermark with the date 1818 below a coat of arms featuring a horn and appears to have once been part of a bound volume.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Reprint. Brief account of this cavalry unit by its French-born & educated leader, naturalized in San Antonio in 1855; the unit patrolled Texas during the war, seeing action in Louisiana during the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill in the defeat of the Federal Red River campaign of 1864. Contextual introduction by Palmer Bradley, a Houston lawyer and amateur historian. Reprint of an exceedingly scarce Confederate pamphlet first published in Austin in 1884, the inaugural publication of the Waco Village Press, number 138 of only 300 printed; regrettably, a bit difficult to read. Nevins (I, p. 80) calls it "A too-brief summary of a unit that merits more study". Slender paperback in plain 'onionskin' jacket, in a custom-built drop-spine (clamshell) case, as pictured. Minor edgewear to booklet, jacket with some creases & chips, case shows minor wear. Text clean; [8], 26 pages + colophon. Size: 5¾" by 9".

In French and Ottoman script. 4 volumes set: ([vi], [2], 784, 125 p., [vi], 1372 p.; [xxx], [2], 1097 p., [vi], 1320 p.). Slight foxing on pages, faded on boards, otherwise a very good set. Ex-libris of Izzet Gündag Kayaoglu. First edition of the complete set of this early dictionary from French to Turkish and from Turkish to French, published in Paris, in London Oriental Translations Committee Printer. Bianchi visited Istanbul at the beginning of the 19th century and prepared dictionary and phrasebooks in Turkish after he had returned to his country. One of his most significant works occurs to be this dictionary. What makes this dictionary noteworthy among other his works is the fact that Turkish words are written together in both Arabic and Latin characters. Turkish words with Arabic letters are written as to stereotyped pronunciation in the work. Therefore, they do not indicate the changes in the language. Bianchi reflects the pronunciation of writing in Turkish letters with Latin characters; and thus, the differences between spelling and pronunciation are highlighted. Thomas-Xavier de Bianchi (1783-1864), born in Paris on June 25, 1783, was the younger brother of the Austrian Field Marshal de Bianchi, Duke of Casalanza. He studied at the Central School of the department of Seine-et-Marne and followed, in Paris, oriental language courses at the College de France and at the Imperial Library under Sylvestre de Sacy. In 1807, he was appointed a pupil at the French school of young people of language in Constantinople, then directed by the scholar Ducaurroy and completed his improvement in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. Sent to Izmir in 1811, he was second there, and then the first dragoman of the Consulate General, and was noted for his dedication during the plague epidemic of 1812. In 1816, he was appointed assistant to the King's secretary-interpreters in Paris and was in charge to accompany the Persian envoy to Louis XVIII in 1819. In 1829, he was sent on a mission to the last day of Algiers, Hussein-pasha. The following year, France intervened in Algeria. He was appointed secretary-interpreter in the title and served as professor of Turkish at the School of Oriental Languages until 1842. After his retirement, he devoted himself to lexicographical and bibliographical work. He was an officer of the Legion of Honor, decorated with the Nichan-Iftikhar, as a member of the Imperial Academy of Constantinople. Tout exemplaire de ce Dictionnaire qui ne serait pas revetu de la signature de l'un des auteurs et editeurs sera repute contrefaçon, et poursuivi cmme tel, en vertu de la loi du 19 juillet 1793. [i.e. Any copy of this Dictionary which does not bear the signature of one of the authors and publishers will be deemed to be counterfeit, and prosecuted as such, under the law of July 19, 1793].

Dumont's workbook provides a total of 25 specimen texts, first in the original handwriting, then in a standardized transcription (such as might be more easily legible to learners familiar with printed Arabic), and finally a French translation. The contents are listed in a separate table at the end: they include examples such as an appointment as manager, various legal documents, literary and narrative pieces, private and business correspondence, and passages from the Qur'an. - Unnumbered pages (1-2) bound last as colophon leaf. Ajouter au panier10 text volumes bound in 11 (8vo) and 2 atlas vols. (oblong folio), altogether 13 vols. With a total of 300 engr. plates (13 folding, 2 in original hand colour, some with touches of colour) and 160 engr. portraits as well as 6 (1 folding) facsimiles, almost all on China paper. Green grained half morocco, spines gilt. First edition, almost never encountered complete as thus. Important source for the history and activities of the 1798 French expedition to Egypt, published in ten text volumes by Louis Reybaud and two atlas volumes. The portraits of the members of the expedition (usually forming part of the text volumes) have here been bound separately; also contains two additional portraits (not counted). "The 160 profile portraits by Dutertre [.] are of particular interest" (Blackmer). Many of the plates showing views, antiquities, maps etc. were engraved after drawings by Vivant Denon, whose work opened up the Middle East for western eyes as no other had done before (cf. Henze II, 50). - Plates numbered 1-309 (each of the 13 folding plates counting as a double), followed by "dernière planche" and 3 maps. Five of the facsimiles have been bound at the end of the second atlas volume, another in vol. 3. The text volumes contain the "Histoire ancienne" (vols. 1-2) and the "Histoire moderne de l'Égypte" (vols. 9-10) as well as the expedition report proper (vols. 3-8). All text volumes have four title pages (slightly departing from those in Blackmer's copy). Vol. 1 also contains a "Rapport" of the work for the Académie by G. Saint-Hilaire, dated Nov. 1836, which names Louis Reybaud as "principal rédacteur". - A magnificent set in period bindings, interior clean and spotless throughout. No complete copy recorded at auction within the last decades. - Blackmer 1476. Gay 2209. Cf. Hage Chahine 4277 and Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 80 (both citing individual text volumes only).
