Azor Hoyt, the writer of the diary, was born 13 September, 1770 in Fairfield PArish, near Stamford, Connecticut. His parents were James and Mary Ann (Belden) Hoyt. Shortly after the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1776 the family of Azor Hoyt and his brother James fled Connecticut to join other fleeing Loyalists on Long Island.
