Wraps. Etat : Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 17, [3] pages. Illustrations. Minor cover wear. This is part of a series commemorating Detroit's 250th Birthday festival. Charles Acker (1918-2007) was an Artist and Educator. As a Jr. High School student at Hutchins, he was featured in Detroit Newspapers and termed "The Boy Genius." Charles worked 42 years as an Art Teacher in the Detroit Public School System. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; subsequently received his Master's Degree in School Administration. Historical illustration is what Charles favored. He illustrated several books during his lifetime. His collection includes many pictures of the military with details of period uniforms, horses, and Native American Indians. The Siege of Detroit, also known as the Surrender of Detroit or the Battle of Fort Detroit, was an early engagement in the British-U.S. War of 1812. A British force under Major General Isaac Brock with Native American allies under Shawnee leader Tecumseh used bluff and deception to intimidate U.S. Brigadier General William Hull into surrendering the fort and town of Detroit, Michigan, along with his dispirited army which actually outnumbered the victorious British and Indians. The British victory reinvigorated the militia and civil authorities of Upper Canada, who had previously been pessimistic and affected by pro-U.S. agitators. Many Indians in the Northwest Territory took up arms against U.S. outposts and settlers. The British held Detroit for more than a year before their fleet was defeated on Lake Erie, which forced them to abandon the western frontier of Upper Canada. Charles Acker (illustrateur).

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. A Book for Explaining Depression to Young Children It is very hard to find the words to discuss mental illness with our children. We want to be open and honest, but at the same time, we don't want to frighten or overwhelm them. The Sticky Switch is based upon how I explained my own depression to my children when they were younger. It explains the difference between simple sadness and depression as well as the stigma attached. Most importantly, it lets children know that it is not their fault nor is it their job to fix things or make it better. The Sticky Switch is written to be easy to read, as well as open and honest without ever talking down to the child. It encourages asking questions and starting a dialogue so our next generation won't treat mental illness like that dirty secret they cannot talk about. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. A Book for Explaining Mental Illness and Stigma to Young Children It is very hard to find the words to discuss mental illness with our children. We want to be open and honest, but at the same time, we don't want to frighten or overwhelm them. The Gorilla in the Room helps to explain both the basics of what it means to have a mental illness as well as the fear, judgment and stigma usually attached. It draws relatable comparisons to help children understand why some people might react negatively while encouraging them to think for themselves and treat others with compassion. The Gorilla in the room is written to be easy to read, as well as open and honest, in a way that never talks down to the child. It encourages asking questions and starting a dialogue so our next generation won't treat mental illness like a dirty secret they cannot talk about. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The effects of abuse last a lifetime. Mental illness. Depression. Abuse. Rape. Words like that carry such a stigma. Those who have never experienced them have trouble understanding. Those who have endured often have no voice. We're battered and broken, afraid of being judged or pitied. Unlovable is a first-hand account of my life as a survivor. It begins with a retelling of the abuse I endured then ventures into how that abuse has bled and oozed into every aspect of my life. Brutally honest and raw, I discuss depression and abandonment, dysfunctional relationships and sex. I share my experiences with suicidal feelings and the difficulty faced when trying to find help. Finally, I invite readers to look with me towards the future, trying to stay strong and face life one day at a time. I write for all those who did not survive their struggles. I write for the survivors who have no voice and struggle to find the strength to get out of bed each day. I write because my depression is killing me inside. I write because I am tired of others defining me and making me feel worthless. I write because I refuse to accept I'm unlovable. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Often, when someone is raised in a dysfunctional household, plagued by abuse and trauma, part of them remains frozen in time, forever that small, frightened child unable to fully cope not only with their past, but their present and future, as well. They unknowingly continue that cycle because it is all they have ever known. Childhood recollections are often recorded in stark black and white, good and bad, very rarely venturing into the truthful shades of gray. One of the hardest steps in the healing process is to restructure long-held thoughts and beliefs, to reconsider the events, traumas and abuses through rational, impartial adult eyes. A year ago, I began my journey toward mental wellness by writing my first book, Unlovable. As I shared all I had been through in my life, it became glaringly obvious how dysfunctional many of my behaviors and choices have been. I knew that in order to heal and move forward in my life, I would have to change. In Unbreakable, I continue my journey towards healing and mental wellness. I strive to step outside the dark memories of my childhood and reconsider the unhealthy paths I have been walking. No one can reasonably expect to repeat the same actions and get different results. In order to change my course, I must change my behaviors. If I am to live healthier, I must make healthier choices. I have lived the majority of my life feeling broken and shattered beyond repair. However, I refuse to be broken any longer. By reevaluating my views on my past and restructuring my present, I hope to break the chains of dysfunction and reforge them into something stronger. I strive to gather up my broken pieces and use them to create a beautiful mosaic. I will never be the person I once was, but I refuse to be broken any longer. I am Unbreakable. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. One woman's journey to find her voice and finally begin to heal, to live and to flourish. After years of struggling to function through mental illness, my world completely shattered and collapsed beneath me. My fiance of eleven years discarded and abandoned me for the latest in a long line of women he had cheated with, on the very day I came home from the emergency room with a surgical referral in hand. I was convinced that my life was over. However, in that moment of despair, a miraculous thing happened. I found my voice. I began to tell my story and write about all I had been through. First I published a book, Unlovable, detailing my life up to that point, including all the abuse and trauma I had endured over the years. But merely telling my story was not enough. The floodgates had been opened. Before the dust had even settled from my book, I began a blog detailing the day to day ins and outs of mental illness. I delved into the effects my illness had on my friends, family and other relationships. I went into gory detail about the ups and downs, highs and lows, the numbness and the downward spiral of depression. I was brutally honest, as well, about my struggles to get treatment and coverage. Join me as I recount my blogs and musings over the last year, as well as the inspirations behind many of the pieces I had written. Hear accounts of the impact my writing has had on others and the profound effect that sharing my experiences has had on my mental wellness. This item is printed on demand.
