Der Filmemacher selbst steht der Unterscheidung zwischen den Gattungen ohnehin skeptisch gegenüber - und genau diese Skepsis liegt dem vorliegenden Band zugrunde, der in 18 Beiträgen eine Annäherung an das Dokumentarfilmwerk des Regisseurs anstrebt. Das Buch unterteilt sich in drei Abschnitte, die jene fast sechzig dokumentarischen Arbeiten entlang diskursiver Dimensionen in den Blick nehmen, die für den Begriff des Dokumentarfilms im speziellen Fall dieses Regisseurs produktiv gemacht werden können: So wird zum einen das »Phänomen Herzog« fokussiert, das in popkulturellen Verweisen, in Auftritten als Schauspieler, als Filmprofessor oder als Inspiration für andere Filmemacher zwischen realer Person und performativer Figur changiert und damit jene Grenze zwischen Fiktion und Realität am Regisseur selbst verhandelt. Rote Fäden entlang seiner thematischen Obses sionen gehen Verläufen und Wendungen nach und grenzen das dokumentarische Werk sowohl vom fiktionalen ab, um zugleich auch Verwandtschaften zu diesem sichtbar zu machen. Einen dritten Strang bilden Untersuchungen der dokumentarischen Methode des Filmemachers, seiner ganz speziellen Art des Personenporträts,seines eigentümlichen Gesprächsstils und seines Umgangs mit Ton und Sounddesign. Der vom Filmemacher immer wieder artikulierten Abneigung gegenüber akademisch-theoretischen, also sprachlichen und schriftlichen Auseinandersetzungen mit seinem Werk wird begegnet, indem das Buch möglichst viele Stile, Perspektiven, Sprechweisen nebeneinanderstellt, die über Herzogs Arbeiten reflektieren. Neben Filmtheoretiker/innen und Kritiker/innen äußern sich Filmemacher und Fotografen, Autoren und Kuratoren zu Herzogs dokumentarischem OEuvre in wissenschaftlicher, assoziativer, essayistischer oder dialogischer Form. »Echos der Gegenwart« wären soin doppelter Weise zu denken: Sichtbar wird in diesem Buch zum einen, wie Herzogs Filme die Gegenwart nicht bloß aufzeichnen, sondern als singuläre künstlerische Brechung zerteilen,überlagern und in veränderter Form - als Dokumentarfilme im Sinne Herzogs - für uns wahrnehmbar machen. Lesbar wird hier aber auch, wie viele Antworten in Form von Stimmen, Gedanken, Emotionen und Positionen seine Filme im Hier und Jetzt hervorrufen und echohaft auf diese zurückwerfen.
