This work by Benjamín Subercaseaux was published in 1957, four hundred years after Lautaro's death, and dedicated to his friend Neruda: ?who lit the heart of Chile with the tea of ??a name: LAUTARO.? It is the last story that the author wrote before leaving literature and dedicating himself to science, one of his many interests. [From jacket flaps] He aquí la única obra teatral de Subercaseaux, y la postrera producción de su carrera literaria, si hemos de creer a sus propias palabras. Hecho que, de por sí, confiere una novedad y un interés extraordinarios a este pequeño libro, breve en sus páginas pero vastísimo en su denso contenido. El autor, tanto en el Prefacio como en el Postfacio de la obra insiste en este carácter de mensaje y de teatro "más para ser leído que representado?, y en todas sus ideas revela en este "Halcón-Ligero? (Lautaro) la culminación de su pensamiento en lo referente a aquella vieja preocupación suya: su Patria, su propio Chile. Y es que, en verdad, en el fárrago de la producción teatral concerniente a la interpretación de nuestra Historia, no sabemos de otro intento tan audaz, apasionante y pleno de directivas para el futuro psicológico y hasta político de nuestro país. En esta: Pasión y epopeya de Halcón-Ligero, Subercaseaux no se limita en mostrarse como un poeta, un novelista, y un ágil artífice de diálogo teatral, sino que nos da por primera vez en Chile un teatro de ideas, concebido a la manera clásica de la "tragedia en cinco actos?, a la vez que moderno por el climax y el anacronismo intencionado de ciertos personajes suyos, que hasta ahora sólo habían sido enfocados dentro de la puerilidad de lo temporal e indígena, contentándonos con la realidad directa, sin atender mayormente a la verdad indirecta que fluye de toda circunstancia provocada por la realidad.

DESCRIPTION - Here is a thrilling sea story and a vivid portrayal of the dash of savagery with civilization. Its scenes range from Buckingham Palace to Tierra del Fuego; its characters include such diverse persons as Jemmy Button, a young Fuegian native, and Charles Darwin, tile famous anthropologist. It is based on Captain Fitz-Roy's Diary and Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle. But tile author has used the historical story only as a starting point for a fascinating fictional adventure. Robert Fitz-Roy, captain of the H. M. S. Beagle, had the virtues and faults necessary to be both loved and hated. Having explored the sea and unknown lands around Cape Horn during the 1830's, he was drawn to and fascinated by the untutored savages of Tierra del Fuego. Convinced that these natives could be civilized, lie takes four back to England and tries patiently and lovingly to educate them in a Christian manner. The Fuegians, lost in their new environment, cannot understand the morals and ethics of civilization. Boat Memory, the most warm-hearted and sensitive of tile four, is very shortly killed by one of civilization's diseases. Jemmy Button, Fitz-Roy's favorite, is jealous of his affection for the other natives. He plots and plans to gain his love exclusively and when he finally runs away, his escapades prove embarrassing and costly. On his return lie slowly uses new and more terrifying tactics. Fuegia whom Fitz-Roy sees as a defenseless and innocent young woman turns into a fury, and sins with a devastating indifference. York Minster, a sensuous, handsome youth, proves impossible to control.
