The twist is that Private Tussie does return (mistaken burial) and Sid finds out that his aunt is really his mother - thus Sid has a father and a mother and the father is a changed man from the war and is now industrious and works for wages setting a proper example for Sid. Parkman's work may be the most familiar piece of western travel writing to modern readers. The exciting adventures of the young Boston Brahmin loose on the plains makes excellent reading. Field remarks: "Mr. Parkman had all the genuine love of adventure of a frontiersman, the taste for the picturesque and romantic of an artist, and the skill in narration of an accomplished raconteur. It is not too high praise to say that his pictures of savage life are not excelled. " Benton's illustrations are exquisite.
