"Nel poemetto si celebra la gloria e la decadenza di Venezia, rievocate da un patrizio in esilio: mosso dall'amore per la patria e dal dolore per il suo declino, il Benzoni raggiunge una certa efficacia espressiva e sincerità di sentimento in una forma elegante, ma in molti casi cade in una eccessiva ricercatezza, prediligendo l'erudizione come fine a se stessa, e usando un linguaggio tanto forbito da riuscire talvolta oscuro. Il poemetto, che prelude a un indirizzo artistico che ebbe tànto favore nell'Italia del romanticismo, e di cui il miglior esempio è l'"Edmengarda" del Prati, fu entusiasticamente lodato dai contemporanei, specialmente dal Monti, che il Benzone si recò a visitare a Milano, ricevendone incoraggiamenti" (Maria Luisa Scauso in Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani", vol.VIII). 150 gr.
