Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. "The Market Place", a novel by Utica author Harold Frederic, was published posthumously by the Frederick A. Stokes Company. The story is graced with attractive Illustrations by artist Harrison Fisher. The attractive cover design was created by F. Berkeley Smith. This copy was…published in 1899 and is likely either the second or the third printing. Harold Frederic's most well-known novel is "The Damnation of Theron Ware", which was a novel about marital infidelity and the tension between protestant and Catholic beliefs. "The Market Place" is a novel that deals with the ups and downs of capitalism high finance in the age of moguls. It describes the lengths people will go to when enticed by the lure of great riches. The story follows the efforts of Joel Thorpe to corner the market and amass a fortune - and what happens after he succeeds. When it was published a year after Frederic's sudden and unexpected death, a scandal broke out in England over the author's estate, where Frederic was living with his mistress. Fredric's wife accused the mistress of murder. A trial ensued. It was the celebrity scandal of the moment. TITLE : The Market Place AUTHOR : Harold Frederic (1856 - 1898) ILLUSTRATOR : Harrison Fisher (1875 - 1934) IMPRINT : Frederick A. Stokes PLACE : New York DATE : (1899) EDITION : Presumed Second or Third Printing of the First Edition (Stated "Eighteenth Thousand" on title page.) Bibliographies state that there were at least three printings in the first year of publication (1899), but no way to determine the First from either of the subsequent printings. So I am making a decision to identify this book as being the Third Printing SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Cover Design by F. Berkeley Smith (b. 1868 -), son of F. Hopkinson Smith, the architect who designed the base for the Statue of Liberty Trade Hardcover; contains eight halftone plate illustrations, including frontispiece; 401 pages; 4 7/8" x 7 3/16"; embossed, pictorial cloth-covered, beige boards. Pictured on the front cover in red, gray, black, gold and pale pink is a young woman in an evening gown being offered a bag of gold by a cupid that sits atop of a mound of gold coins and bags. Title lettering in red. Under the title are two facing British pound signs bracketing a red heart. Artist Smith's initial S can be seen in the bottom left corner; lettering in red on spine bracketed by decorative embellishments in red, black and gilt. Two hearts, one gold and one red embrace a pound sterling money sign. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which has seen use, and displays that use in various ways, the following particulars and imperfections noted: EXTERIOR — Spine extremities are compressed and display slight fraying - a soft bump to the head has caused shallow creasing. Spine coloring just slightly darkened. While there is a touch of smudge and a small spot of discoloration at the fore-edge, the front board displays nicely, with strong color. The rear board displays some light weathering along the fore-edge, else s clean and presentable. The text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING — The book has obviously been read, and thus is not as tight as when issued - however there are no detached or loose leaves, and the whole remains fairly solid. There is evidence of mending to the end-paper over the rear hinge. INTERIOR — There is edge smudging to both the front paste-down and the front free end-paper. (see picture provided above); A gift inscription dated Xmas 1907 is written in ink on the front free end-paper (See picture provided above). While there may be some small smudges or spots through the text, none leapt out when I was perusing the book, and the interior presents cleanly with no marking, no writing or marginalia and no underlining. The illustrations display nicely. Harrison Fisher / F. Berkeley Smith ( Cover Illustration) (illustrateur).
