L'analisi dello stile delle miniature ha poi permesso di determinare luogo e data di esecuzione dei singoli manoscritti finora incerti. Due dei manoscritti sono così ricondotti alla produzione artistica dell'Italia medievale: il Giobbe Vaticano a Roma degli inizi del IX secolo ed il Giobbe Patmiaco, in parte, a Roma della seconda metà dell'XI secolo.

I-II --- No comprehensive history of the devil's iconography in Early Christian and Byzantine art has hitherto appeared. The paper analyses the representations of Satan, minor devils and demoniacs in particular in Eastern Christian art, fo…cusing on the rare pictures of Anthony's life that have survived in Santa Maria Antiquam and the later pictures of hermits who resist the devil's temptations. As for the New Testament, the manuscript of the Sacra Parallela in Paris provides images for Jesus' temptation in the wilderness, the Gadarene demoniacs, and the episode of the Canaanite woman. The oldest images of flying devils we have are found in the Murano Diptych and the Rabbula Gospels, where the exorcism of the Gadarene demoniacs is represented. Most of the paper concerns the devil's image in Byzantine Psalters and in the Book of Job. It is suggested that the iconography of Satan and devils originated in different realm: satyrs from Dionysiac thiasos, athletic jesters, and the winged Eros.

Lo studio accurato del manoscritto, che costituisce l unico testimone orientale miniato del Fisiologo, rende ragione dell importanza di un tale recupero per la storia sia della miniatura bizantina, sia delle conoscenze naturalistiche ed esegetiche del Medioevo orientale. Le miniature qui riprodotte raffigurano infatti la natura fisica degli animali descritti nel testo, come anche l ermeneia morale che consegue dal parallelo istituito tra i comportamenti degli animali e quelli degli uomini, interpretati alla luce delle Scritture. L indagine delle fonti zoologiche del Fisiologo pone l accento sui trattati naturalistici e altre opere dell antichità. L'analisi dello stile delle miniature ha poi permesso di determinare luogo e data di esecuzione dei singoli manoscritti finora incerti. Due dei manoscritti sono così ricondotti alla produzione artistica dell'Italia medievale: il Giobbe Vaticano a Roma degli inizi del IX secolo ed il Giobbe Patmiaco, in parte, a Roma della seconda metà dell'XI secolo.Euro 125,00.- Language . I-II --- The Laurentian Library in Florence owns an Arabic manuscript with the apocryphal Gospel of the Infancy of Our Lord (cod. Orientali 387), which i illustrated with over fifty drawings. It has the size of a notebook. The text of the… manuscript was first published by M. E. Provera, for the Custodia Francescana di Terra Santa and more recently by S. Voicu. Only a few of the illustrations have been hitherto published. A colophon states that the manuscript was written in Mardin in 1299 C.E., that is during the so-called Syriac Renaissance. Differently from the contemporary Gospel lectionaries in Syriac, the illustrations are in Islamic style. The Gospel of the Infancy is part of a group of narratives of the early days of Jesus; scholars claim that all the writings of the group hark back to a lost fifth-century Syriac narrative. The miracles accomplished by Jesus' bathwater and swaddling bands are the core of the narrative. The chapters of the Gospel tell miracles, healing diseases, casting out demons, and popular events of everyday life. Women's matters dominate the Florentina Gospel: care of children, their diseases, possession, eroticism, beauty, jealousy. The Gospel is completed by a harmony of the events from the canonical Gospels, passages from the Gospel of Nicodemus, and a prologue with Zoroaster prophesying that a virgin will bear the Messiah in Bethlehem.

Sismel, 1998. pp. XXVIII-128 115 tavv. f. t --- Del prezioso codice di Smirne, ridotto in cenere nell'incendio che devastò la città nel 1922 e testimone, tra le altre opere, del Fisiologo, l'autore ricostruisce il superstite corredo iconogra…fico (databile al XIV secolo) pubblicando 89 fotografie delle miniature, scattate tra la fine dell'Ottocento e gli inizi del Novecento e ora rintracciate in vari archivi sparsi per il mondo. Lo studio accurato del manoscritto, che costituisce l'unico testimone orientale miniato del Fisiologo, rende ragione dell'importanza di un tale recupero per la storia sia della miniatura bizantina, sia delle conoscenze naturalistiche ed esegetiche del Medioevo orientale. Le miniature qui riprodotte raffigurano infatti la natura fisica degli animali descritti nel testo, come anche l'ermeneia morale che consegue dal parallelo istituito tra i comportamenti degli animali e quelli degli uomini, interpretati alla luce delle Scritture. L'indagine delle fonti zoologiche del Fisiologo pone l'accento sui trattati naturalistici e altre opere dell'antichità. Altre raffigurazioni furono invece introdotte nel ciclo miniato da fonti iconografiche diverse, probabilmente in epoca paleologa.
