Stribling [Oscar Lee Stribling] (1865-1926) from prominent Waco grocer and banker Edward Rotan (1844-1932). A few spots of foxing and minor soiling to interior leaves which otherwise remain clean. Brick-red pictorial cloth, black lettering & illust. front cover, & spine (minor edgewear, scuffing, some rubbing, occasional interior foxing), still VG- copy, w/ former ownership markings on ffep., from the library of David G. Kohl (1946-2025), former art teacher at the Hong Kong International School, musician, artist, and historian. Fifth edition of ostensibly what claims to be an eye-witness account of the Boxer Rebellion while the author was in China during the siege of the legations, and later became Brigade interpreter for the British Expeditionary Force. The semi-notorious author was dismissed from the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, perhaps from the looting, and questionable behavior mentioned in his book (including taking over a Manchu home filled with women), Simpson (1877-1930) later worked as a Daily Telegraph correspondent in the Far East, but later was killed after taking control of customs in Tianjin for Yan Xishan. First edition of the first work by a slightly shady, but interesting resident in China, whose father had worked for the Chinese Maritime Customs service. He worked as a journalist in both Chinese and English, and was assassinated in 1930 after having been embroiled in Chinese politics. The work gives a complete account of the Manchurian frontiers from the earliest days to the growth and final meeting of the Russian and Chinese Empires the Amur river region and one of the best accounts of the history of Sino-Russian relations.…

Solid hardcover. ; First edition printed in China of this observer's detailing of the siege and sack of Peking in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion, written by a British national who was born in China and spent his life in various government and media jobs. This copy has a fascinating association. The oldest owner's signature is "Hilda Macdonald" about whom I can find no information. The second signature is that of Howard E Kohn II, best known as the producer of the noir film "Hidden Fear". The final ownership marking is the stamp "Samuel Bronston Productions Ltd." Samuel Bronston produced the 1963 epic "55 Days at Peking" about the Boxer Rebellion siege of the foreign legations at Beijing. This "China Edition" of Indiscreet Letters may have been a reference work used in the movie's writing and filming. This first China edition of a first-person account providing insight into a key 20th-century political moment in China has a fascinating association by being used by the production company of the American movie on that subject. ; vii, 447 pages.…
