3. printing, 8° (24x16), 287 p., with 15 photo pictures, publisher's hardbound cloth with jacket, jacket old repaired, else tight and clean, well cared, The treatment of German physicists under the Nazi regime had far-reaching consequences both for the outcome of the Second World War and for the course of science for decades thereafter. Although this fact has been known from a few famous episodes, it has not been dealt with thoroughly by scholars because it involves two very different disciplines. Political historians have cautiously left it to historians of science, who in turn have shied away from it out of ignorance of the political intricacies. Alan D. Beyerchen here examines this history in detail, basing his research on archival materials in Germany and the United States and on tape-recorded interviews with leading physicists. At least twenty-five percent of Germany's academic physicists who were working in 1933 lost their positions during the Nazi period. The victims-Jews and other 'politically unreliable' persons-included some of Germany's finest scientists. Those who remained faced opposition not only from Nazi officials but also from certain members of their own community, notably the Nobel laureates Philipp Lenard and Johannes Stark. Beyerchen describes the mechanisms of prejudice, the reaction to the dismissals, and the impact of the 'Aryan physics' movement which ultimately failed.- * * * EU-AUSLAND: Wir versenden nach Österreich und nach Frankreich - kein Versand in die restlichen EU-Länder möglich ** due to EPR-Restrictions NO SHIPPING within the EU except to France and to Austria * * * BTC on-chain & lightning accepted * * *.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the power of metaphors, not just as literary devices, but as fundamental building blocks of human thought and communication. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, the author explores how metaphors shape our understanding of the world, from the language of science to the rhetoric of leadership. We discover how metaphors can be used to convey complex ideas with striking efficiency, evoke powerful emotions, and even influence our perceptions of reality. This exploration goes beyond the familiar examples of metaphors in poetry and literature, revealing their pervasive presence in everyday speech and visual media. The author demonstrates how metaphors, often operating beneath the surface of our awareness, play a crucial role in shaping our thoughts, actions, and interactions with others. Ultimately, this book illuminates the profound significance of metaphors in our lives, equipping us with the ability to use them more effectively and understand their influence on our understanding of the world around us. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
