Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a detailed historical account of the crucial reforms that reshaped the British Army in the latter half of the 19th century. It specifically focuses on the period between 1868 and 1874, when Edward Cardwell served as Secretary of State for War, a period marked by unprecedented changes in military administration and organization. The author, a key figure in the reforms themselves, provides firsthand insights into the challenges and triumphs of this era, including the abolition of the purchase system for officers, the introduction of short-service enlistment, and the implementation of a localized system for organizing forces. The book explores the complexities of navigating the competing interests of various departments, the political pressures surrounding military reform, and the long-standing tensions between civilian control and military tradition. Through meticulous research and detailed analysis, the author illuminates the profound impact of Cardwell's reforms on the British Army, paving the way for the modern military structure we recognize today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …
