Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. Up for sale is a premier, collector-grade copy of "The Calas Affair: Persecution, Toleration, and Heresy in Eighteenth-Century Toulouse" (1960). This scholarly work is the definitive investigation into the infamous 1762 trial and execution of Jean Calas—a landmark case of religious persecution famously championed by Voltaire. Unique Research Provenance: This copy was clearly used as a dedicated research volume in the early 1960s. Included with the book are two original 1961 newspaper clippings related to the case: • A feature review by the renowned British author and Voltaire expert Nancy Mitford titled "The Last to be Broken on the Wheel." • A lead review of Edna Nixon's Voltaire and the Calas Case (1961) titled "Voltaire Dedicated Purse and Pen to Clear Calas."Provenance: This volume features the neat, vintage owner's signature of "M. DeKruif" in blue ink at the top of the front flyleaf. This likely identifies the book as part of the private library of a dedicated scholar of French history, matching other volumes from the same collection. Listing Highlights: • Stated First Edition: 1960, published by Princeton University Press. • Academic Provenance: Features the signature of M. DeKruif on the front flyleaf. • Stunning Binding: Original royal blue linen cloth with an intricate gold and blue-stamped spine. • Original Dust Jacket: Retains the scarce pictorial jacket featuring a historical engraving.Condition: Fine (Book) / Very Good (Internal) / Good (Jacket) • Internal Browning (Acid Transfer): As is common with vintage research volumes, the 1961 newspaper clippings were stored inside the book, leaving a distinct bronze-colored tanning (acid transfer) on pages 52-53 and 104-105. The text in these areas remains 100% sharp and legible; the paper is not brittle. • General Internal: Aside from the localized tanning, the pages are in pristine, bright white condition. The title page is crisp and free of foxing. • Cloth Binding: The underlying royal blue linen cloth is in near-perfect, "as-new" condition with sharp corners and lustrous gold spine-gilt. • Dust Jacket: Present and mostly intact. Shows typical age-related sun-fading on the spine and light chipping/paper loss at the head and foot of the spine. • Binding: Perfectly square and exceptionally tight.…
