From the Preface: "It has been our object. to make our young friends fully acquainted with the peculiarities of our Domestic Quadrupeds." Thomas Bilby studied the Infant School System under Buchanan, whose school at Brewer's Green, Westminster, is said to have been the first Infants' School opened in England. In 1825 he obtained the charge of a Training School at Chelsea, where some 500 teachers were instructed in his system. In 1832 he proceeded to the West Indies, where he introduced his system of teaching. On returning to England, he became the parish clerk of St. Mary's, Islington. Jointly with Mr. R. B. Thomas Bilby (1794-1872) was apparently a schoolmaster and the author of many educational books for children (Young Folks' Illustrated Book of Birds; The Book of Animals; The Infant Teacher's Assistant; etc.). This book went through a second edition in 1828 and a third in 1836, and other reprints followed. The first, however, is rare. OCLC notes copies at the British Library, National Library of Scotland, the Newberry Library and Princeton only. Octavo, in fours. ix, [1], 104 pp. Folding timetable before the first leaf of text.
