Both describe traditional folk religion as practiced in an annual cycle of rituals and rites in northern China. Annual Customs and Festivities in Peking was a translation, with commentary, by American Sinologist Derk Bodde, of an earlier, ca. 1900, Chinese text that provided a day-by-day account from a Chinese perspective of the festivals, pilgrimages, fairs, customs, clothing and foods of each season, as practiced in the capital. Manchu Customs and Superstitions was written by Mrs. Bogan, a foreign resident of Peking and describes much of the same sequence of annual rites but from the perspective of a Western eye. Her book also provided descriptions of Manchu weddings, the customs accompanying the birth of a child, celebrations of birthdays and funerals.
