Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Interest in works by outsider artists, including artists with disabilities, has reached the mainstream. Beginning in the late 1980's and early 1990's with an interest in folk art, outsider art is now an established movement, and is seen every year in shows nationally and internationally. Creative Growth Art Center, located in Oakland, California, is the oldest and largest non-profit visual art center in the US providing innovative art programs to adults with developmental, physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. The more than 120 adults enrolled in the program create imaginative, beautiful, and surprisingly well-executed works, and receive proceeds from the sale of these works. For many of these artists, this income is their primary source of financial independence. This book features full-page photographic portraits of 55 Creative Growth artists, alongside a piece of their artwork, by nationally-renowned photographer Leon Borensztein. In addition, each spread includes a color photograph of another of that artist's works, and a short statement from the artist. Borensztein's photographs portray each artist, even the most severely disabled, in an honest, positive, and sympathetic light. The photos and text capture the artists' personal connection to their work, and offer the viewer a window onto each artist's unique perception of the world.…

His first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, a continuation of his seminal "American Portraits 1979-1989" collection. "After emigrating to the United States from Poland, Leon Borensztein took a fly-by-night job as a traveling portrait photographer, visiting homes and businesses across the country and making portraits for working-class clientele in the style of the Sears Portrait Studios. During these sessions, Borensztein would set up a generic backdrop behind the subject, while moving the camera back far enough so that the camera captured glimpses of the subjects' personal spaces or belongings. The resulting body of work provides a rich sociological document. Individually, these are some of the most compelling and touching portraits of their time" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Leon Borensztein collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with an original print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Leon Borensztein. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The remaining copies from the publisher command $100. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. 13 plates, 1 original print.
