Hardcover. Etat : As New. First Edition. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear to the pictorial cloth over boards, bright interior, unmarked. Contributions by the three editors and by Lone Lindholt, Thomas Pegram, B.C. Patel, Kofi Quashigah, Mohammad Abdo, Laurien J.L. Koster, Jozef De Witte and others. The volume examines the role of national human rights institutions (N.H.R.I.s) in monitoring economic, social, and cultural (E.S.C.) rights. It challenges the assumption that NHRIs are less effective in relation to E.S.C. rights than civil and political rights. It argues that N.H.R.I.s do play a strategic role in ensuring states' compliance not only with their obligations to respect and protect E.S.C. rights but also in addressing the obligation to fulfil them. The editors and contributors consider the ways in which the particularities of local context affect an institution's ability to effectively address E.S.C. rights and discusses the need to develop new approaches to deal with broader issues of resource allocation and socio-economic policy. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. x, 1-190 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Paperback. Etat : New. This collection of essays interrogates how human rights law and practice acquire meaning in relation to legal pluralism, ie, the co-existence of more than one regulatory order in a same social field. As a social phenomenon, legal pluralism exists in all societies. As a legal construction, it is characteristic of particular regions, such as post-colonial contexts. Drawing on experiences from Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, the contributions in this volume analyse how different configurations of legal pluralism interplay with the legal and the social life of human rights. At the same time, they enquire into how human rights law and practice influence interactions that are subject to regulation by more than one normative regime. Aware of numerous misunderstandings and of the mutual suspicion that tends to exist between human rights scholars and anthropologists, the volume includes contributions from experts in both disciplines and intends to build bridges between normative and empirical theory.…

Soft cover. Etat : New. Summary:"One of the most remarkable aspects pertaining to the legal bans and societal debates on the face veil in Europe is that they rely on assumptions which lack any factual basis. To rectify this, Eva Brems researched the experiences of women who wear a face veil in Belgium, and brought her research results together with those of colleagues who did the same in four other European countries. Their findings, which are outlined in this volume, move the current discussion on face veil bans forward by providing a much-needed insider perspective"-- Provided by publisher.…

Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. Bringing together leading scholars in the field, this open access book presents novel theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, ethical reflections and comparative frameworks to inform research on production, content, dissemination and use of alternative media. Over the last decade, falling levels of media and political trust and sweeping populist election victories have coincided with a wave of new alternative media. Seeking to challenge mainstream news media and established politics, these alternative media have attracted extensive political, media and scholarly attention. Building on in-depth insights from different countries across Europe, it represents a key reference for alternative media research in Europe and beyond. This book demonstrates how we are now entering a third stage of alternative media research, characterized by more cross-theoretical fertilization, methodological innovation and focus on contextual conditions.
